THE iconic Cape Jaffa Lighthouse in Kingston SE is set to be repainted and refurbished through a project that will breathe new life into the much-loved community complex with support from the South Australian Government.<\/p>\n
The lighthouse was constructed on the Margaret Brock Reef and operated for 101 years, before being dismantled and reconstructed on Marine Parade, Kingston SE in 1974. It has been operating since 1976 as a museum staffed by volunteers.<\/p>\n
A $124,000 Enabling Infrastructure Grant will contribute towards the first stage of the Kingston Beacon Project, which includes undertaking urgent conservation tasks, repainting and refurbishment of the lighthouse.<\/p>\n
The works will ensure that the lighthouse is structurally sound so that tourists can continue to visit and enjoy the historic structure.<\/p>\n
South Australian Regional Development Minister Clare Scriven said the Malinauskas Government was proud to support this project through the Enabling Infrastructure Program, which will ensure the historic Cape Jaffa Lighthouse remains a vibrant and inclusive place for future generations to enjoy.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs well as being a source of history and learning, the lighthouse is also a place where the Kingston SE community can come together,\u201d Minister Scriven said. \u201cThese Stage 1 works will ensure it continues to attract tourists and form the centrepiece of the precinct\u2019s development.\u201d<\/p>\n
The overall Kingston Beacon Project includes plans to develop an interpretive centre, caf\u00e9 and accessibility upgrades so that all ages and abilities can learn about the history of the lighthouse.<\/p>\n
The lighthouse will become a community meeting place, positively impacting both the local community and regional tourism visitation.<\/p>\n
Importantly, the final project also includes plans to share the Meintangk Dreamtime stories, enriching the cultural experience for visitors and strengthening the connection to Country for Traditional Owners.<\/p>\n
The final project will play a key role in the community\u2019s broader efforts to revitalise Kingston\u2019s maritime precinct and is expected to significantly enhance social wellbeing by creating a welcoming, inclusive hub for all.<\/p>\n
