MORE than 120 community members attended a free aged care forum hosted by the Mount Gambier and Districts Health Advisory Council at the end of last month.<\/p>\n
Held across two identical sessions to maximise accessibility, the forum provided guidance on some of the most common – and often confusing – aspects of transitioning into aged care and aged living, including financial planning, legal matters, managing Centrelink, and care options.<\/p>\n
Speakers included representatives from Centrelink, local financial and legal experts, and Boandik – a respected local aged care provider.<\/p>\n
Organiser and Health Advisory Council member Sue Szopory said the turnout and engagement reflected just how many people are actively trying to prepare for what can be a difficult and emotional stage of life.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know the aged care system can feel overwhelming, especially when decisions need to be made quickly,\u201d Ms Szopory said. \u201cWhat we hoped to do was give people a clear starting point – and judging by the questions and feedback, it really resonated.\u201d<\/p>\n
Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and engage directly with guest speakers, helping them walk away with greater confidence and clarity about the future for themselves or a loved one.<\/p>\n
Presiding member Josh Lynagh said the Health Advisory Council was proud to bring the forum to life as part of its commitment to improving health outcomes across the region.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis event was about supporting our community to be informed and empowered when it comes to aged care,\u201d Mr Lynagh said. \u201cIt was heartening to see so many people attend and hopefully leave feeling better equipped to support themselves or their loved ones.\u201d<\/p>\n
