GAMBIER Tile Centre were the sponsors for the Saturday Stableford competition last Saturday, with 108 in the field at the Mount Gambier Golf Club.<\/p>\n
B Grade (11.0 \u2013 16.0) players dominated the top of the leaderboard, with the first three positions.<\/p>\n
Bryan Pink (12) shot the best score of the day with 42 points.<\/p>\n
Pink\u2019s opening nine holes was a model of consistency with eight pars and only a solitary bogey on the par 4 third hole to accumulate 23 points after a 1 over the card 37 off the stick.<\/p>\n
Pink then added another 19 points on the back nine with a further five pars, three bogies and really his only slip up, a double bogey 6 on the par 4 seventeenth.<\/p>\n
A countback was needed to separate Michael Rookas (16) and Damian Smith (13) with both finishing on 40 points.<\/p>\n
Rookas front nine consisted of a par, seven bogies and a double bogey to chalk up 18 points.<\/p>\n
It was the back nine that he collected most of his score with four bogies, four pars and a birdie on the par 5 fifteenth, to shoot a 39 off the stick and have 22 points.<\/p>\n
Smith signed for 20 points on each nine and was unlucky not to take out one of the major prizes, being the only other player to score 40 points or more.<\/p>\n
Clint Mitchell (7) was the winner in A Grade (-9.0 \u2013 10.0) with 39 points.<\/p>\n
Mitchell scored 16 points on the front nine with four bogies, two pars and birdies on the first and fifth holes.<\/p>\n
Following on to the back nine, Mitchell had a 36 off the stick to add 23 more points, with a bogey, seven pars and a birdie on the par 5 eleventh.<\/p>\n
Jud Wheatley () was two points behind with 37 points with splits of 17 and 20 points.<\/p>\n
Some of the tricky pin positions may have contributed to players in C Grade (17.0 \u2013 45.0) struggling on the day, as none were able to beat their handicap.<\/p>\n
It was Robert McLellan (18) who took out the win with 36 points.<\/p>\n
McLellan was the model of consistency across his round, duplicating his 18 points thanks to two pars, five bogies and two double bogies on both the front and back nine.<\/p>\n
Douglas Reid (18) was second with 35 pointshighlighted by a birdie 3 on the par 4 last.<\/p>\n
David Boyce (16) was the only other player to better his handicap on the day with 38 points.<\/p>\n
To win one of the remaining 31 balls players needed a score of 32 points or better on a countback.<\/p>\n
Joshua MacLean (9) won the nearest to the pin on the eighth hole with Sam Letizia taking it out on the sixteenth.<\/p>\n
AUGUST 21 RESULTS<\/strong><\/p>\n The unusually fine winter weather conditions attracted a good-sized field of 101 starters to the Thursday Stableford competition.<\/p>\n The blustery northerly helped to keep the scores down for a lot of the players.<\/p>\n Joe Clements (4) and Dennis Smith (20) were two that handled the conditions best, with both finishing on 39 points.<\/p>\n Looking at the scorecards, Clements was a clear winner on countback.<\/p>\n Clements started slowly with 15 points on the front nine, helped by a birdie three on the par 4 fifth hole.<\/p>\n Obviously a pitstop into the clubhouse for refreshments at the turn spurred Clements on as he fired three consecutive birdies on the tenth, eleventh and twelfth holes.<\/p>\n A bogie followed on the thirteenth before four pars spanning the fourteenth to seventeenth holes.<\/p>\n Clements then closed out the round with another birdie on the final hole to have shot a 3 under the card 33 off the stick on his inward nine, winning the $100 Pro Shop voucher.<\/p>\n Smith\u2019s round was much more consistent with splits of 19 points on the front followed by 20 points on the back.<\/p>\n This included five pars, 10 bogies and three double bogies, to earn him the runner ups $50 Pro Shop voucher.<\/p>\n Rob McIntyre (9) took out the five balls for third spot with 38 points, followed by Kevin Cook (8), who required a countback on 37 points to win 4 balls from Tony McGregor (14) winning three balls and John Kirby (24) who took out two balls on a countback from four other players on 36 points .<\/p>\n Players required 32 points or better on a countback to earn one of the remaining 16 balls.<\/p>\n Pro Shot winners were Chris Anderson (10) on the eighth and Rob Perryman (6) on the sixteenth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" GAMBIER Tile Centre were the sponsors for the Saturday Stableford competition last Saturday, with 108 in the field at the Mount Gambier Golf Club.
