CITY of Mount Gambier has installed a temporary enclosed dog exercise area at Blue Lake Sports Park, investing $23,000 as an interim measure until the broader Blue Lake Sports Park Master Plan is implemented.<\/p>\n
This initiative follows a resolution passed at the January 2024 Council meeting, applying Clause 10.2 of By-Law No. 5 – Dogs 2018 to all sporting ovals within the park. The clause prohibits dogs in designated areas to reduce potential conflicts with organised sporting activities and enhance safety for all park users.<\/p>\n
City of Mount Gambier General Manager Corporate and Regulatory Services Jane Fetherstonhaugh said dogs were no longer permitted to roam sporting fields within Blue Lake Sports Park as we have had ongoing issues with people not picking up after their pets.<\/p>\n
The new facility is located on the western side of the park behind the baseball diamonds, providing a secure space for dogs to exercise off-leash. It includes two zones for larger dogs and one for smaller breeds, catering to a range of canine needs.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe recognise the importance of safe, designated spaces for dogs to exercise off-leash,\u201d Ms Featherstonhaugh said. \u201cThis temporary facility will remain in place until the permanent dog park – which will be incorporated within the Master plan – is established.\u201d<\/p>\n
Council encourages dog owners to make use of the new facility and emphasised the importance of cooperation in preserving the quality of shared public spaces.<\/p>\n
