THE Mount Gambier Community Mayor\u2019s Christmas Appeal has officially been granted Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status, meaning donations of $2 or more are now tax-deductible, making it easier than ever for locals to support those in need this festive season.<\/p>\n
Each year, the appeal plays a vital role in ensuring vulnerable and isolated members of our community experience the joy and dignity of Christmas.<\/p>\n
With DGR status now in place, people can donate and receive a tax-deductible receipt, helping stretch generosity even further.<\/p>\n
City of Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin said this milestone means every dollar donated not only brings joy to someone in need, it also benefits the donor.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are proud to make giving more accessible and impactful for our community,\u201d Mayor Martin said.<\/p>\n
All funds raised are distributed through the Christmas Cheer Program, delivered by local agencies:<\/strong><\/p>\n Uniting Care<\/p>\n ac.care<\/p>\n St Vincent de Paul<\/p>\n The Salvation Army.<\/p>\n \u201cIn 2024 these agencies supported 1657 people from 711 families over the festive season,\u201d Mayor Martin said. \u201cThe appeal is a true community effort. It is powered entirely by local generosity, and every cent stays right here in Mount Gambier.\u201d<\/p>\n Demand for support has increased as the cost of living continues to rise, placing greater pressure on agencies to meet the growing need for food hampers, gift vouchers, and presents for individuals and families.<\/p>\n St Vincent de Paul\u2019s John D\u2019Souza said they were expecting to have more demand than ever before for help as part of the Christmas Cheer program, as they have had so many requests for assistance with food this year.<\/p>\n \u201cOn a regular weekday we used to get about six to eight people, but now we are getting more than 20 requests for help,\u201d Mr D\u2019Souza said.<\/p>\n ac.care\u2019s Deanne Swift said they used to do their emergency relief program on Mondays and Fridays and they\u2019ve had to open up another day.<\/p>\n The City of Mount Gambier acts as a collection point for funds, ensuring transparency and efficiency.<\/p>\n \u201cThis year we\u2019ve also introduced an online donation option, making the process easier and more convenient for many people,\u201d Mayor Martin said. \u201cChristmas is a time for compassion and connection. With DGR status now in place, we hope even more people will be inspired to give generously and help make this season brighter for all.<\/p>\n \u201cWhether it\u2019s $2 or $200, every donation helps bring warmth, food, and festive cheer to those who need it most.\u201d<\/p>\n As the festive season approaches, the Christmas light display on the Old Town Hall will return to mark donation milestones.<\/p>\n For every $5000 raised, a new window will be illuminated with magical Christmas lights, visibly celebrating the community\u2019s generosity.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful way to show how every contribution adds up to something truly special,\u201d Mayor Martin said.<\/p>\n Ways to donate<\/p>\n
