{"id":16758,"date":"2025-11-28T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/?p=16758"},"modified":"2025-11-26T17:06:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T06:06:15","slug":"glenelg-shire-tackles-gender-based-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/news\/glenelg-shire-tackles-gender-based-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Glenelg Shire tackles gender-based violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GLENELG Shire Council is proud to support the 2025 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, running from November 25 to December 10, reinforcing its commitment to building a safe, respectful, and equal community.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the campaign, council is again partnering with the Rotary-led SayNo2Family Violence, for the Walk Against Family Violence taking place in both Casterton and Portland.<\/p>\n<p>The walk brings together residents, community organisations and businesses in a united stand against family violence.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Walk Details \u2013 Casterton<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Date: Friday, November 28<\/p>\n<p>Time: 9am: Walk from Hey Jude caf\u00e9<\/p>\n<p>9.45am \u2013 Community morning tea<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Walk Details \u2013 Portland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Date: Friday, December 5<\/p>\n<p>Time: 8.30 am at Market Square for Free Rotary Breakfast<\/p>\n<p>Time: Walk at 10am from Market Square, along Percy, Julia and Bentinck Streets to the Civic Hall<\/p>\n<p>Civic Hall from 11am \u2013 12pm with guest speakers including Orange Door.<\/p>\n<p>Refreshments will be available.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the 16 Days of Activism campaign, council is also delivering a range of activities to raise awareness and strengthen community prevention efforts, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Installing street and footpath signage across the Shire;<\/li>\n<li>Lighting up council buildings in orange;<\/li>\n<li>Featuring books focused on the themes of respect and gendered-violence in Glenelg Libraries and across our early years settings;<\/li>\n<li>Delivering internal staff training on how and where to refer community members to The Orange Door for family violence support;<\/li>\n<li>Progressing Council\u2019s Gender Equality Action Plan;<\/li>\n<li>Hosting a community screening of \u2018It Starts With Us\u2019, a short-film highlighting the impact of family violence on children.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mayor Karen Stephens said council has also partnered with the regional partnership across the Barwon South West region, Respect 2040, which is focused on preventing violence against women and advancing gender equality.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By supporting these local partnerships and initiatives, underpinned by the funding support of Respect Victoria and Safe &amp; Equal, we are taking a united stand for a community where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommunity webinars are also being held as part of the Respect 2040 partnership through Women\u2019s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West.
