	{"id":17338,"date":"2026-01-05T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/?p=17338"},"modified":"2025-12-20T09:24:28","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T22:24:28","slug":"innovative-campaign-targeting-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/news\/innovative-campaign-targeting-youth\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovative campaign targeting youth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AN INNOVATIVE new anti-vaping ad campaign called \u2018Don\u2019t let vaping in\u2019 has been launched in South Australia to encourage more young people to quit.<\/p>\n<p>This campaign is different to traditional approaches by incorporating an interactive element designed to engage audiences through social media, targeting young people who vape.<\/p>\n<p>While the latest data shows vaping rates in young people are decreasing, there are still too many caught in the vaping cycle of nicotine addiction.<\/p>\n<p>Data from the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) shows 10.8 per cent of young people aged between 15 and 29 vaped in 2024, down from 15.1 per cent in 2023.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17367 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2026\/01\/Vaping_Assets-1.widt_96875-1-725x1024.jpg?_t=1766183039\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"904\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2026\/01\/Vaping_Assets-1.widt_96875-1-725x1024.jpg 725w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2026\/01\/Vaping_Assets-1.widt_96875-1-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2026\/01\/Vaping_Assets-1.widt_96875-1-768x1085.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2026\/01\/Vaping_Assets-1.widt_96875-1-1087x1536.jpg 1087w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2026\/01\/Vaping_Assets-1.widt_96875-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The \u2018Don\u2019t let vaping in\u2019 campaign, developed by Quit Tasmania, is a modern, relatable and highly engaging portrayal of vaping addiction, with the personification of a vape as an online nuisance.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign\u2019s video advertisements will appear in a range of social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, Reddit and YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>Further campaign reach will be achieved through audio (Spotify and Listnr) and in outdoor advertising.<\/p>\n<p>South Australian Health Minister Chris Picton said vapes are full of highly addictive nicotine and nasty chemicals and the government wants young people to stay away from them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new campaign is aimed at grabbing the attention of younger South Australians to highlight just how addictive and dangerous vapes are,\u201d Minister Picton said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouth Australia is leading the way in tackling this important health issue and it\u2019s great that our measures are working. We want even more young people to quit vaping \u2013 or better yet, never take it up. The only thing we should be putting in our lungs is air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To effectively support young people to quit vaping, it is important to engage with them through multiple platforms and communication styles.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, a component of the campaign has been specifically designed to interact with users aged 16 years and over on the social media platform, TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>When users interact with the videos they view, messages will be sent to them about addiction to vaping, creating a pathway to quitting advice and tools to help them quit.<\/p>\n<p>A dedicated website will also boost the campaign\u2019s modern look and feel, designed to engage young people with quick, accessible quit support information and strategies for managing cravings and withdrawal.<\/p>\n<p>The South Australian Government has introduced a range of measures and laws targeting vaping and smoking in South Australia including:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Investing $16 million in a taskforce within Consumer and Business Services (CBS) to tackle the illicit trade.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Implementing a raft of new smoke and vape free public areas near beach jetties, schools, kids\u2019 sporting events and shopping centre entrances.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Banning the sale of therapeutic vapes to under 18s.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Becoming the first state in the nation to ban highly addictive nicotine pouches.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Banning vending machine sales of tobacco products in public areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Delivering new education campaigns in schools to prevent children taking up vapes.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Rolling out hard-hitting media advertising campaigns targeted specifically at young people about the harms of vaping.<\/p>\n<p>South Australia\u2019s response to tobacco and vapes has been rated the best in the country, according to a national scorecard released by the Australian Council on Smoking and Health.<\/p>\n<p>To test the effectiveness of the\u2019 Don\u2019t let vaping in\u2019 campaign, 400 young South Australians completed online surveys to provide feedback.<\/p>\n<p>Sixty-four per cent of the surveyed cohort reported that the advertisement \u2018makes me stop and think\u2019, 67 per cent said it acts as a strong argument to quit vaping, 70 per cent reported the advertisement makes them feel concerned about their vaping, 69 per cent felt motivated to quit, and 64 per cent believed it could help someone realise they are addicted to vaping.<\/p>\n<p>Quit Tasmania reported the advertisement performed very well, driving awareness and delivering more than five million impressions (single views) across social media platforms, and more than 14,000 visits to the quit support website.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018Don\u2019t let vaping in\u2019 campaign will air in South Australia over the next five weeks as part of the South Australian Government\u2019s smoking and vaping harms awareness campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Preventive Health SA Chief Executive Marina Bowshall said the \u2018Don\u2019t let vaping in\u2019 campaign was expected to transform young people\u2019s perception of vaping to make them stop and think about the very real consequences of this addictive and dangerous habit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe unique interactive component is an innovative way to increase awareness among young South Australians,\u201d Ms Bowshall said. \u201cVaping and smoking are highly addictive \u2013 we are keen to see the positive impacts of this creative campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People who smoke or vape are also encouraged to visit their GP to discuss how to begin their quitting journey.
