THE spotlight continues to shine on the Naracoorte Regional Livestock Exchange \u2013 more recently at national level through Saleyards Australia.<\/p>\n

Owned and operated by Naracoorte Lucindale Council, South Australia\u2019s largest saleyards were selected for the \u2018Member Spotlight\u2019 by Saleyards Australia in its first newsletter for 2026.<\/p>\n

The \u2018Member Spotlight\u2019 outlined the NRLE\u2019s operations and staff team, recent upgrades, sales highlights and its delivery of strong economic and social benefits to the local community.<\/p>\n

Last week, Saleyards Australia also named the NRLE canteen in the top 10 best saleyards canteens in Australia following a national public vote.<\/p>\n

Established in 1973, the NRLE services producers across South Australia and Victoria and plays a vital role in the regional livestock supply chain.<\/p>\n

Average annual throughput sits at around 85,000 cattle and 500,000 sheep, making it the largest exchange of its kind in the State.<\/p>\n

The saleyards continually deliver exceptional sales results, including national records.<\/p>\n

Over the past year, the most significant change at the facility has been the rollout of the mandatory sheep eID system, driving important upgrades, investment in new equipment and staff training to ensure the system is implemented successfully and sustainably.<\/p>\n

As recently as the end of last month, bull pen laneway gates were installed.<\/p>\n

Other projects planned for the current financial year include the upgrade of timber sheep selling pens and auctioneers\u2019 walkways and the upgrade of lighting automation in the yards.<\/p>\n

The value of the NRLE to the entire local community has also been highlighted recently with the NRLE and Naracoorte Combined Agents, along with the local Royal Flying Doctor Service support group, holding a lamb drive which has seen approximately $20,000 raised for the RFDS.<\/p>\n

Naracoorte Lucindale Mayor Patrick Ross said the NRLE continued to be one the district\u2019s most significant economic assets.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt plays a pivotal role in supporting our farmers, agents, transport operators, and the many local businesses that rely on a strong livestock industry,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur saleyards connect primary producers with national markets, helping to ensure local livestock achieves fair value while strengthening the broader supply chain. Their ongoing performance reflects the professionalism and dedication of our rural community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayor Ross said that beyond the economic contribution, the saleyards were a hub of knowledge-sharing and connection.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey bring people together, support regional employment, and reinforce our position as a key livestock centre in South Australia,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cCouncil remains committed to maintaining a safe, efficient and modern facility that supports the long-term future of agriculture in our region. The success of the saleyards is a success shared by our entire community.\u201d<\/p>\n
