{"id":18222,"date":"2026-03-13T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/?p=18222"},"modified":"2026-03-11T15:22:04","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T04:22:04","slug":"ball-dominates-bat-in-barber-shield-final","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/sport\/ball-dominates-bat-in-barber-shield-final\/","title":{"rendered":"Ball dominates bat in Barber Shield final"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BARBER SHIELDPENOLA V EAST GAMBIER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alex Hentschke\u2019s Barber Shield final didn\u2019t start as he would have liked, removed for a duck in East Gambier\u2019s first innings but he was the key in defending the Bulldogs\u2019 modest total of 115, taking 5\/18 from his 20 overs in a match shaping performance that earned him man of the match honours.<\/p>\n<p>Emerson Marks was the other destroyer with the ball, taking 4\/23, including the final wicket of Penola\u2019s run chase, ensuring East\u2019s victory in the Barber Shield title decider.<\/p>\n<p>Penola won the toss and opted to bowl and while East openers Alex Hill (22) and Ben Hentschke (45) laid a solid foundation, the rest of the East batting line-up had no answer to the tight Penola bowling.<\/p>\n<p>Logan Gibbs was the pick of the Eagles with 4\/19 from 14 overs, while Michael Waters and Bredon Smart both chipped in with two wickets each and Jacob Edwards grabbed the other wicket on offer.<\/p>\n<p>No Penola bowler conceded more than two runs an over and while scoring was clearly tough, Penola had set up a modest run chase for its batters.<\/p>\n<p>Enter Alex Hentschke and Marks, who simply ripped through the Penola batting line-up, ending their title bid in the 48th over.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Mullan\u2019s 15 at the tail end of the doomed run chase was the highest score for Penola with the second wicket stand of 18 between Lewis March and Bredon Smart the most damaging of the innings \u2013 Penola dismissed for 70 where the nine extras were the third highest contributor to the score.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Hentschke sent down 10 maidens in his 20 over spell and in East Gambier\u2019s second innings, it was Hentschke (5n0.) and Marks (25no.) out in the middle when the match was called \u2013 the two men who set up the win with ball in hand.<\/p>\n<p>East Gambier 1st innings 115 (Ben Hentschke 45; Alex Hill 22; Logan Gibbs 4\/19; Bredon Smart 2\/40; Michael Waters 2\/23) &amp; 2nd innings 3\/74 (Emerson Marks 25no.) d Penola 1st innings 70 (Jack Mullan 15; Alex Hentschke 5\/18; Emerson Marks 4\/23)<\/p>\n<p><strong>CROUCH SHIELDSOUTH GAMBIER V KONGORONG<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South Gambier has been a run making team in the 2025\/26 season and the Crouch Shield final was no exception as the Maroon Caps easily eclipsed Kongorong\u2019s modest total of 133 to claim the title.<\/p>\n<p>Kongorong won the toss and elected to bat but aside from a well made 40 at the top of the order from opener Thomas Bellinger, some middle order hitting from Jarnu Grobbelaar (26) and some late resistance from Kody Vanderhorst (29), Kongorong just could not get on top of the bowling and was never able to establish a dangerous partnership.<\/p>\n<p>The South bowling attack shared the load with Adam Vause, Naite Fox and Jace Maxwell picking up two wickets apiece and Kobu Maxwell, Jaggar Geary and Tom Drenthen also chipping in.<\/p>\n<p>At 3\/26, South\u2019s run chase looked shaky at best but the middle order allied with Geary compiling an impressive 68 and veteran Michael Sims showing his class with an unbeaten 77 as South kept the scoreboard ticking over and compiled 9\/254 to put the result beyond doubt.<\/p>\n<p>Kongorong\u2019s Will Von Stanke was lionhearted in his efforts to defend the total, taking 5\/77 from his 20 overs \u2013 the only multiple wicket taker for the Hawks.South Gambier 9\/254 (Michael Sims 77no.; Adam Vause 2\/29)<\/p>\n<p><strong>COX BROS SHIELDTARPEENA V GLENCOE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Luke Richards has led Tarpeena to an emphatic Cox Bros Shield premiership, doing damage with both bat and ball in the eight wicket victory at the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Richards took 4\/12 from his 14 overs, a spell that included an astonishing eight maidens, as Tarpeena ensured runs were at a premium and he then led the run chase, top scoring with 44 in what ended up being a comfortable run chase.<\/p>\n<p>Sending Glencoe in after winning the toss, Tarpeena\u2019s bowling attack got the job done, dismissing Glencoe for only 89 runs in the 52nd over.<\/p>\n<p>Scoring was just so difficult for Glencoe, no better demonstrated than the determined efforts of opener Barry Payne who dug in and lasted 55 balls for only nine runs.<\/p>\n<p>Luke Richards did the early damage, taking two wickets in the blink of an eye and at 4\/23, Glencoe was in a world of pain.<\/p>\n<p>Kallan Price and Joshua Agars then looked to steady the ship with a 52 run fifth wicket stand but it was the only genuine resistance as the remaining five wickets fell for 13 runs.<\/p>\n<p>Darren Vine made a critical early breakthrough as Tarpeena\u2019s run chase go underway, removing Connor Richards cheaply, but Luke Richards made that critical 44 with Alex Carter finishing the job with an unbeaten 22 from 11 balls, that included one four and three sixes as the match finished with a rush.Tarpeena 2\/93 (Luke Richards 44;
