GLENELG Shire Council\u2019s L2P Program continues to show its value across our community as young people begin their journey toward safe and confident driving.<\/p>\n
The L2P Program, funded by the Transport Accident Commission and administered by the Department of Transport and Planning, is delivered locally by Glenelg Shire Council.<\/p>\n
It supports young people who may not otherwise have access to a supervising driver or vehicle, helping them achieve the 120 hours of supervised driving required to obtain their licence.<\/p>\n
Already this year six young participants have gained their probationary licence through the program.<\/p>\n
Their achievements have been supported by two new volunteer mentors who have joined the team to guide learners as they build their hours behind the wheel.<\/p>\n
Demand remains strong, with eight new learner applications recently received.<\/p>\n
These young people join a growing waitlist, with an average wait time of 46 days before a learner can be matched with a mentor and begin driving.<\/p>\n
The program currently has 31 active learners across the shire.<\/p>\n
Together they have completed more than 300 supervised hours on the road this year, travelling through our town centres, rural stretches and bushland landscapes that shape local driving experience.<\/p>\n
A highlight this year has been the arrival of a new L2P vehicle in Heywood.<\/p>\n
This valuable addition has been made possible through the support of the Heywood and District Community Bank, the Magistrates Court and the Masonic Lodge.<\/p>\n
The new car will help ensure young people in Heywood and surrounding communities can access the practice they need.<\/p>\n
Glenelg Shire Council acknowledges the dedication of volunteer mentors and the generosity of community partners who continue to strengthen this important program.<\/p>\n
