TO mark History Month this May, Mount Gambier Library is inviting young explorers and their families to step into the past with the launch of a new Children\u2019s History Walk – a fully illustrated walking\u2013tour map that brings the Cave Garden\/Thugi precinct to life.<\/p>\n

Designed especially for children, the map highlights historic and contemporary buildings, sculptures, artworks, and other items of significance through vibrant illustrations, quirky facts, and hands on activities.<\/p>\n

Created by the Mount Gambier Library in collaboration with local children\u2019s book illustrator Bianca Richardson, the project blends local history with Bianca\u2019s signature style of colourful, wonky-line illustrations.<\/p>\n

Her passion for old buildings making her the perfect creative partner to help reimagine the city\u2019s stories for younger audiences.<\/p>\n

Manager Library and Community Development Georgina Davison said the Children\u2019s History Walk fills a gap, offering an engaging, accessible way for children, young people, families, and the wider community to discover our city\u2019s past.<\/p>\n

“For many years, the library has worked closely with schools to provide local history programs and resources,\u201d Mrs Davison said. \u201cOutside of those school visits, there were limited materials designed specifically for children as most existing resources were written by adults, for adults.\u201d<\/p>\n

The initiative was the brainchild of library programs officer- local and family history Danni Reade who is passionate about sharing and preserving Mount Gambier’s history with all generations.<\/p>\n

\u201cEngaging children in our local history is not only important – it\u2019s also incredibly fun. Children bring boundless curiosity, brilliant questions, and perspectives that breathe new life into familiar stories,” Mrs Reade said.<\/p>\n

Illustrator Bianca Richardson said the project had been a joyful opportunity to combine storytelling, history and creativity.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing part of a project that brings together local history and illustration has been such a joy. I hope the grown-ups enjoy it just as much as the children. There\u2019s always something new to discover,” Mrs Richardson said.<\/p>\n

This fun and educational resource will welcome both curious locals and visitors wanting to learn more about Mount Gambier\u2019s unique history.<\/p>\n

The map will be officially launched on Sunday, May 3, at 10.30am at the Mount Gambier Library.<\/p>\n
