GENERATIONS in Jazz has today proudly announced Dale Cleves OAM as the first-ever inductee into the Generations in Jazz Hall of Fame, recognising his extraordinary contribution to Australia\u2019s largest youth jazz festival.<\/p>\n
A founding figure of Generations in Jazz, Dale Cleves has been instrumental in shaping the event from its humble beginnings into the internationally recognised festival it is today. When the festival first began in 1987 with just six stage bands, Dale saw far beyond its modest scale\u2014envisioning an event that would inspire and connect young musicians for generations to come.<\/p>\n
Nearly four decades later, that vision has become reality. In 2026, Generations in Jazz welcomed more than 5,000 students, including 270 stage bands and 142 vocal ensembles, travelling from across Australia and New Zealand to take part in the iconic event.<\/p>\n
Dale played a pivotal role in securing and purchasing the land at OB Flat, establishing a permanent home for the festival and laying the physical foundation for its continued growth. His leadership has also been central to securing government support, enabling the development of permanent infrastructure and amenities that ensure the festival\u2019s sustainability and future expansion.<\/p>\n
Beyond the stage, Dale\u2019s impact extends deeply into the community. His innovative approach to accommodation and regional collaboration has enabled thousands of students, teachers, and visitors to attend each year, supporting the Limestone Coast\u2019s tourism and local economy.<\/p>\n
In 2012, Dale was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for his service to music, tourism, and hospitality\u2014an honour that reflects his lasting contribution both to the arts and the broader community.<\/p>\n
Adelaide born trumpeter and educator, Rob Chenoweth said Dale\u2019s induction as the inaugural Hall of Fame recipient was both fitting and significant.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no more fitting name to begin this Hall of Fame than the man who helped create the very stage we stand on today,\u201d Mr Chenoweth said. \u201cDale\u2019s vision, belief, and determination have created opportunities for thousands of young musicians and ensured Generations in Jazz will continue to thrive for decades to come.\u201d<\/p>\n
Generations in Jazz is now widely recognised as one of the largest youth jazz festivals in the Southern Hemisphere, built on the passion, dedication, and foresight of its founders.<\/p>\n
