RECONSTRUCTION works on the Southern Ports Highway will soon pause with the road set to fully reopen to the public from June to August this year.<\/p>\n
The first five kilometres of road from the Beachport Outlet has now had the final seal applied, delivering safer and smoother travel for road users.<\/p>\n
Roadworks between the Southend turn\u2013off and Robe turn\u2013off will continue throughout May, with the road closed to the public from 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday.<\/p>\n
A detour via Hatherleigh is in place during these times.<\/p>\n
Following delays caused by an extended wet winter last year, Wattle Range Council revised its construction program to prioritise long\u2013term road quality.<\/p>\n
As part of this approach, works will slow over the winter months, allowing the road to fully reopen to the public from June to August.<\/p>\n
Council\u2019s director of engineering services Peter Halto, said pausing construction during winter is a practical decision that will help ensure a stronger, longer\u2013lasting road.<\/p>\n
\u201cCouncil is proud of the work delivered so far, continuing works through wet winter conditions risks further delays and can compromise the long\u2013term quality of the road,\u201d Mr Halton said.<\/p>\n
\u201cRather than pushing ahead in poor conditions, council has taken a practical approach that delivers better value for money and improves access for the community over winter.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the winter pause, the Southern Ports Highway will be open to all traffic, with speed restrictions in place while the temporary seal remains.<\/p>\n
Construction is scheduled to recommence in September this year.<\/p>\n
At that time, the road will again close to the public during construction hours.<\/p>\n
Local residents and businesses who need to travel regularly between Southend and Beachport will again require permits to allow limited access during these periods.<\/p>\n
