{"id":19289,"date":"2026-05-24T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/?p=19289"},"modified":"2026-05-20T15:19:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T05:19:07","slug":"boandik-unveils-critical-dementia-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/news\/boandik-unveils-critical-dementia-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Boandik unveils critical dementia services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BOANDIK\u2019S new Dementia Unit was officially opened lasy week in Mount Gambier at 90 per cent capacity, expanding much-needed dementia care opportunities in the Limestone Coast.<\/p>\n<p>The $3.5million purpose-built unit, at Boandik\u2019s Moore Court precinct, features the latest technology and design features to provide the highest standard of care for people with advanced dementia.<\/p>\n<p>The state-of-the-art accommodation unit has eleven beds and will open at nearly full capacity, with admissions staggered over coming weeks for better transition of residents.<\/p>\n<p>Design features include natural lighting, clear wayfinding and sensory gardens, with consideration given to colour schemes and flooring depth perception to ensure a safe engaging environment.<\/p>\n<p>Boandik CEO Pamela Alde said it was exciting to see the new accommodation finally open with a hand-selected team of staff at the helm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll our staff have education in caring for people with dementia, however there are always people who love to work with and have a genuine affinity for people with cognitive challenges and dementia,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a real privilege to be working in this area and it requires a special kind of person; patient, calm and above all, someone with empathy and kindness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr Alde said the specialised accommodation had a higher staff ratio than general areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Moore Court, there will be dedicated staff, plus a Lifestyle Assistant and Dementia Services Advisor, who will play an important role in settling newcomers in and integrating residents for the best possible experience,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Project funding for the new unit was secured through the Australian Government\u2019s Aged Care Capital Assistance Program (ACCAP), with an additional $700,000 provided by Boandik.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was October 2023 when we closed the pre-existing Moore Court facility and started planning for the new development, so it\u2019s been nearly three years in the making,\u201d Dr Alde said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect this new service will play a crucial role in alleviating pressure on existing aged care services in the Limestone Coast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The number of Australians living with dementia in 2026 has increased to an estimated 446,500, according to research released by Dementia Australia earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Boandik is one of the largest aged care providers in Mount Gambier with 470 staff, 220 residents, 35 retirement living residents and more than 600 community clients.<\/p>\n<p>People or families interested in the new accommodation can make an inquiry or EOI by contacting the Boandik team on <a href=\"mailto:livewell@boandik.org.au\">livewell@boandik.org.au<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BOANDIK\u2019S new Dementia Unit was officially opened lasy week in Mount Gambier at 90 per cent capacity, expanding much-needed dementia care opportunities in the Limestone Coast.
