CHILDREN and young people across Mount Gambier are discovering new ways to learn thanks to the Children\u2019s University Passport to Learning program at Mount Gambier Library.<\/p>\n
Delivered through Adelaide University and supported by the City of Mount Gambier, the program is designed to inspire a love of learning by engaging students in a wide range of out of school learning opportunities, and acknowledges the importance of the many after school activities students are already involved in.<\/p>\n
The program is administered through the Mount Gambier Library and Melaleuca Park Primary School and Yahl Primary School. City of Mount Gambier Library Team Leader Children\u2019s and Youth Services Erin Jones said the initiative empowers young people to see learning differently.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy encouraging children to choose activities based on their own interests, Children\u2019s University helps young people take responsibility for their learning journey and recognise that valuable learning happens everywhere and is lifelong,\u201d Mrs Jones said.<\/p>\n
City of Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin said the program plays an important role in supporting young people across the Limestone Coast, helping them build confidence, curiosity and aspiration.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a regional ambassador for Children\u2019s University, I am proud to see Mount Gambier embracing a program that shows children learning is not limited to the classroom,\u201d Mayor Martin said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt recognises the richness of opportunities available in our community and encourages young people to explore, participate and develop a lifelong love of learning.\u201d<\/p>\n
Through the program, students earn recognition for participating in approved out of school and learning destination activities. These include a wide range of activities across Mount Gambier and the surrounding region, such as library after school clubs, the new Children\u2019s History Map, kids DIY workshops at Bunnings, and outdoor learning experiences and visits to local attractions.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs students accumulate learning hours, they progress through different graduation levels, celebrating their commitment to learning with a yearly graduation ceremony,\u201d Mrs Jones said.<\/p>\n
Mayor Martin said recognising children\u2019s achievements through formal milestones helps reinforce the value of learning beyond school hours.<\/p>\n
\u201cCelebrating effort and curiosity sends a powerful message to our young people that learning in all its forms matters, and that our community is proud to support them every step of the way,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
