GLENELG Libraries are celebrating the success of their Hooked on Christmas initiative, with more than 30 handmade blankets now ready to be donated to vulnerable community members this winter.<\/p>\n
Originally created as a crochet Christmas tree display at Portland Library, the project has taken on a new life.<\/p>\n
Following the festive season, the tree was carefully deconstructed, with its crochet squares repurposed into colourful, handcrafted blankets thanks to the efforts of dedicated local volunteers.<\/p>\n
Many contributors to the project were also involved in creating the original tree, including several first-time crocheters who have continued developing their skills and passion for the craft.<\/p>\n
The Glenelg Libraries will now donate the blankets to the local Salvation Army branch to deliver to those in need across the community.<\/p>\n
Manager Libraries and Arts Tanya Flockhart said the overwhelming response highlighted the power of community connection.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat began as a creative library program quickly grew into something much larger, bringing people together to learn new skills, share knowledge and contribute to a meaningful cause,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom July to September, we received more than 2,000 crochet squares from across the region and beyond, including contributions from a craft group in Melbourne. The unprecedented response showed just how deeply it resonated with community members.<\/p>\n
\u201cOverall, this project has created a real sense of connection, while also delivering practical support to those who need it most. We thank all of the individuals who generously donated squares or put together these blankets, your efforts have been nothing short of extraordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n
The project continues to attract interest from across Victoria, with enquiries received from community groups, aged care facilities and crafting organisations keen to replicate the initiative.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
