MORE than 30 handmade blankets are keeping vulnerable community members warm this winter, thanks to a creative and compassionate community project.<\/p>\n
Originally created as a Christmas tree display at the Portland Library, the initiative brought together community members who donated their time, skills and expertise to crochet more than 2,000 individual squares.<\/p>\n
Following the festive season, the tree was carefully deconstructed, with each crochet square repurposed into 30 colourful, handcrafted blankets.<\/p>\n
Glenelg Libraries has since donated the blankets to the Portland Salvation Army, who will distribute them to those most in need across the community.<\/p>\n
Kellie Smith from the Salvation Army Portland said the donation comes at a crucial time as winter sets in.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis project is a wonderful example of community generosity in action,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe truly appreciate the extraordinary effort that has gone into creating these blankets. Thank you to everyone who contributed squares locally and from further afield, and to the volunteers who lovingly assembled them.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese blankets will make a real difference, helping us support those in need during winter. A colourful, handmade blanket not only provides warmth, but also brings comfort and care to members of our community.<\/p>\n
