A TOUGH weekend on the road for both the OneFortyOne Mount Gambier Pioneers Women and Castec Rural Supplies Pioneers Men with both teams returning home empty-handed.<\/p>\n
The women went down to Dandenong by 14 points and then an agonising three points to Nunawading on a disappointing road trip.<\/p>\n
The Pioneers entered the clash looking to extend their four game winning streak and while the Rangers led by five at the first break, it was only a one point lead by half time.<\/p>\n
The Rangers then took control with 22 points to eight in the third period and then built a 17-point lead from there on the way to the eventual 14-point victory to make it three straight to further close in on a top 10 spot at 8-10.<\/p>\n
The Pioneers are now 10-7 following the loss to begin their road double with Lara Edmanson producing 18 points, 10 rebounds and four assists with Gracie Champion adding 14 points, seven boards and two assists.<\/p>\n
Tilly Boller added 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals, Tayah Burrows 11 points, eight boards, three assists and three steals, and Carla Pitman 11 points, six rebounds and three assists.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, it was Spectres star Rachel Antoniadiou, who put up 19 points in the fourth quarter and 38 for the game, that was the main reason Nunawading was able to come from behind and steal a 77-74 victory over the Pioneers.<\/p>\n
The Mount Gambier team had the better of the start to be leading 17-11 at quarter-time before Nunawading hit back with 22 points to 15 in the second quarter to lead by one by the main break.<\/p>\n
The Pioneers then opened up a six-point lead in the third quarter and then early in the fourth term they were up by seven on the back of three-pointers from Lara Edmanson and Gracie Champion.<\/p>\n
From there, Leia Hanafin hit a three-pointer for the Spectres before Riley Lupfer knocked down two in succession and suddenly the home team was up four.<\/p>\n
Rachel Antoniadiou then hit two more triples for Nunawading to stretch the lead to five and she hit the two clutch free throws to secure the three-point win.<\/p>\n
For the Pioneers, Champion ended up with 19 points, seven rebounds and two assists with Edmanson adding 19 points, 11 boards and three assists.<\/p>\n
Pitman delivered a triple double consisting of 12 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists with Boler 10 points and seven boards, and Mackenzie Burke nine points, three boards and two steals.<\/p>\n
Narrow losses were the order of the day for the Pioneers men as well, suffering a two point loss to Nunawading and a 10 point defeat at the hands of Nunawading.<\/p>\n
The Rangers final two minutes of the game saw them snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, putting up eight points to one to turn the Pioneers five point buffer into a three point loss for the Mount Gambier team.<\/p>\n
The Rangers held a two point lead at quarter time and it was only one at the half and there was then no more than five points separating the teams the entire second half as well with Mount Gambier on top by that margin thanks to a triple from Ngor Manyang with just under two minutes to play.<\/p>\n
From there, it was all Dandenong starting with five quick points from Joe Palmer before Justin Bieker scored attacking the basket after the Rangers forced the Pioneers into a shot clock violation.<\/p>\n
Deng Deng put up 26 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and three steals and Alex Mudronja added 24 points, six assists and five rebounds.<\/p>\n
Titus Robinson also had 26 points, five rebounds, three blocks and two steals, and Ngor Manyang 15 points and four boards.<\/p>\n
In the clash with the Spectres, the Pioneers came home with a rush, scoring 34 points in a frenetic final quarter, but had left themselves with too much to do and fell 100-110.<\/p>\n
The Spectres looked comfortable at half time with a 17 point buffer and extended that to as many as 25 points so when the visitors went on a 13-0 run, Nunawading had enough wriggle room to withstand the surge and bank the victory.<\/p>\n
The Pioneers now sit at 5-13 after their two weekend losses with Lucas Gordon ending up with 22 points and 16 rebounds while Robinson top scored with 27 points on 10\/13 field goal shooting with 4\/4 from downtown.<\/p>\n
