WHEN Candice Merrett saw a promotion for the Cancer Council\u2019s Dog Walk for Cancer she knew she had found her perfect match when it comes to embracing fundraiser.<\/p>\n
The Property Co Mount Gambier negotiator and advisor has raised almost $5000 and is currently ranked fourth nationwide of the more than 6200 registered participants for the 2026 fundraiser.<\/p>\n
\u201cLike so many people, I\u2019ve seen the impact cancer has on individuals and their families, especially for those in the Limestone Coast region who often have to travel long distances for treatment,\u201d Candice said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWalking my two dogs, Lexie and Honey, is already part of my routine, so I thought, why not turn something I love doing into an opportunity to raise funds and awareness for such an important cause.\u201d<\/p>\n
So that is exactly what she did, initially setting herself, what she now realises was a modest target of $300.<\/p>\n
\u201cSupporting my community has always been important to me, and this challenge has given me the chance to give something back,\u201d she said. \u201cMy original fundraising goal was $300, but then I started thinking bigger. I partnered with Blue Lake Golf Club to host a quiz night, and I was overwhelmed by the incredible support from our community.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom generous cash donations to local businesses, friends, and family donating raffle prizes, the kindness and generosity shown by everyone has been amazing.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery dollar raised helps make a difference, and I\u2019m so grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n
Of course, the stars of the show were Lexie and Honey as they took every step with Candice on the way to the impressive fundraising tally.<\/p>\n
The challenge was to walk 50km with your dog during the month of June and then ask friends, family and the community to support your walk and help power life-saving research and support services through the fundraising aspect of the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery kilometre Lexie, Honey and I walked was for everyone who has heard, or will hear, the words \u2018you have cancer\u2019, Candice said. \u201cAnd every dollar we raised together will help fund life-saving cancer research, prevention programs and essential support services for people impacted by cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n
Candice and all participants in the 2026 fundraiser are all too aware that 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by age 85 and this Dog Walk for Cancer aims to help change that statistic for the better.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
