Local author to unveil poetry collection at library<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mount Gambier Library is pleased to present local author Jo-ann Mckay with the launch of her collection of poetry in \u2018Rise Little One, Rise\u2019 this Wednesday at 7pm.<\/p>\n

Joann McKay is a survivor. At the age of three years old, Joanne\u2019s mother died, and her life suddenly and dramatically changed forever.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the death of my mother, I was given away, and after many years of physical, emotional and sexual abuse, I became a ward of the state,\u201d Ms Mckay said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was dealt some horrific life experiences, but I needed to heal. My ambition was to publish a book about my journey through domestic violence and abuse, to find my true strong self. I chose the genre of poetry because it can say so much in such a small space\u201d.<\/p>\n

Written from an honest survivor\u2019s perspective, Rise Little One, Rise, captures Joann\u2019s unique life and healing journey. <\/p>\n

The theme is not despair, but resilience, strength, courage, and the glowing light of hope.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope that in sharing my writings, to encourage other survivors to tell their stories and a reminder to be kind to one another. A simple smile can have a positive impact and a ripple effect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Supporting the event, The Haven Mount Gambier; a safety hub located within the Mount Gambier Library, providing information and referrals for at risk women and children.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost 10 women a day are hospitalised for assault injuries perpetrated by a spouse or domestic partner and on average, one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner\u201d, The Haven community partner Vivienne Jaffer said.<\/p>\n

\u201cKnowledge is power, you never know who may need help and knowing who to contact locally may save someone\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Agency staff will be available with advice and guidance on the night, and books available for sale and signing for $10 cash only.<\/p>\n
