{"id":425,"date":"2022-11-16T08:00:03","date_gmt":"2022-11-16T08:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/?p=425"},"modified":"2023-11-01T08:11:08","modified_gmt":"2023-11-01T08:11:08","slug":"celebrating-contributions-to-the-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/news\/celebrating-contributions-to-the-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating contributions to the community"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>District Council of Grant shines a light on positive ageing during Seniors Month<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More than 100 senior citizens across the District Council of Grant have come together to celebrate their contributions and successes within the community.<\/p>\n<p>In honour of Seniors Month, council coordinated four Positive Ageing Luncheons in the final week of last month for residents aged 55 and above to enjoy learning together, food and each other\u2019s company.<\/p>\n<p>Community members gathered at local restaurants in the following townships:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Port MacDonnell on Monday, October 24, at the Victoria Hotel (pictured top right);<\/li>\n<li>Tarpeena on Tuesday, October 25, at the Pines Hotel (pictured below bottom);<\/li>\n<li>Carpenter Rocks on Thursday,<\/li>\n<li>Mount Schank on Friday, 28 October at The Bellum Hotel (pictured below top)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-426\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2023\/11\/1-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1228\" height=\"625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2023\/11\/1-5.jpg 1228w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2023\/11\/1-5-300x153.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2023\/11\/1-5-1024x521.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2023\/11\/1-5-768x391.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1228px) 100vw, 1228px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite poor weather conditions, council\u2019s chief Eeecutive officer, Darryl Whicker, was pleased with the communities participation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese annual events are an excellent opportunity for our older population to connect with each other while also supporting local business eateries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is also the perfect opportunity for council to acknowledge the considerable contributions our seniors make to our community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe additional insight our senior residents gave about each community is valued as this information will help council plan\u00a0for our future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bron Perryman shared her experience with being involved with the Kids &amp; Cockies Helping\u00a0Cockies Project where Bird\u00a0Life Australia and Zoos SA representatives help rejuvenate the endangered Red-tailed Black- Cockatoo population, and Sharon Bruhn shared her love of collecting sea glass from the Southern Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Sharon was the presenter at Carpenter Rocks and was\u00a0delighted to share her sea glass collection activity with the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the third time I have been invited to talk, the previous two times I spoke about living\u00a0on Christmas Island and the Red Crab migration &#8211; this year it was really nice to talk about something local,\u201d Ms Bruhn saireally nice to talk about something local,\u201d Ms Bruhn said,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought that if people were interested then they could get out locally and search for sea glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also thought that it [local\u00a0restaurant at Carpenter Rocks] was a great little place to present in, it was a nice intimate spot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Staff are already beginning to<\/p>\n<p>plan next year\u2019s Seniors Month celebrations.
