Kingston\u2019s Big Lobster has been immortalised in the latest limited edition coin collection from Australia Post celebrating the country\u2019s \u201cBig Things\u201d including the Big Banana in New South Wales and Queensland\u2019s Big Pineapple.<\/p>\n
Member for MacKillop Nick McBride has a close family collection to the quirky seaside sculpture and welcomed the exposure for the Kingston landmark.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is such an honour to see \u201cLarry\u201d immortalised on our $1 coin,\u201d Mr McBride said. \u201cWe are so lucky to have such an iconic tourist attraction in our region.<\/p>\n
Many people won\u2019t realise but Larry was actually built for Katherine McBride\u2019s father, Ian Backler, and his friend, Rob Moyse. Katherine\u2019s parents owned the adjacent \u2018Big Lobster\u2019 Motel \u2013 and thought it would be a great idea to have a giant lobster to attract tourists to the town. They also wanted the Lobster to be a gateway to the South East\u2019s lucrative and important lobster industry.<\/p>\n
\u201cI doubt they would have ever thought that \u2018Larry\u2019 would make it onto a $1 coin \u2013 and I know that Katherine\u2019s father will be immensely proud to see this happen.\u201d Larry the Lobster and the other selected \u2018big\u2019 quirky sculptures dotted in towns around Australia have been printed on the gold coin and were available in participating post offices since last Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Limited edition stamps cost $1.20, individual coins are $3 and the full coin set with a folder is $29 \u2014 and one in every 10 coin sets purchased will feature a coloured Giant Murray Cod coin.<\/p>\n
The coins will also be used as change at participating Australia Post offices.<\/p>\n
