{"id":5435,"date":"2023-04-26T10:51:49","date_gmt":"2023-04-26T10:51:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/?p=5435"},"modified":"2023-11-06T10:53:17","modified_gmt":"2023-11-06T10:53:17","slug":"providing-a-soundtrack-for-the-lives-of-aged-care-residents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/living\/providing-a-soundtrack-for-the-lives-of-aged-care-residents\/","title":{"rendered":"Providing a soundtrack for the lives of aged care residents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every Tuesday afternoon, the residents of Harbourside Lodge are treated to a magical experience that enriches their daily lives, while strengthening their voices through the sound and songs of yesteryear\u2019s music.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the support of United Way Glenelg Lewis Court Fund, local singer Jess Cook and ukulele and bass performers Jan and Ron Colliver provide a musical experience that is nothing short of enchanting for the residents.<\/p>\n<p>United Way Glenelg executive officer said the Singing Strong program was having a profound impact on the lives of the residents. \u201cThe program is bringing joy and enriching the daily routines by reviving memories with classic tunes like \u201cRun Rabbit Run,\u201d \u201cCockles and Mussels,\u201d and \u201cShe\u2019ll be Coming Round the Mountain,\u201d as well as more recent songs such as \u201cTake Me Home, Country Roads,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The original purpose of the program was to support people living with Parkinson\u2019s Disease, post-stroke, mild dementia, COPD or those people who have issues with voice, speech or breathing.<\/p>\n<p>A plethora of research supports anecdotal evidence of people withdrawing from the community and social outlets as their voice deteriorates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is heart-warming to see the residents\u2019 faces light up with happiness as they listen to their favourite songs and join in with the singing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many of the residents have instruments and love to play along with the band, including Ray Dennert (pictured), who plays the guitar and attends each week religiously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful we can provide this program and help create lasting memories that enrich the lives of the residents,\u201d Ms Carr said.
