{"id":5663,"date":"2023-04-19T12:56:41","date_gmt":"2023-04-19T12:56:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/?p=5663"},"modified":"2023-11-06T12:57:44","modified_gmt":"2023-11-06T12:57:44","slug":"mount-gambiers-newest-aussie-citizens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/news\/mount-gambiers-newest-aussie-citizens\/","title":{"rendered":"Mount Gambier\u2019s newest Aussie citizens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Calling Australia their new home<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know how excited you must be feeling on this special day in your life.\u201d That was the opening message from City of Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin OAM as she oversaw the city\u2019s most recent citizenship ceremony at the beginning of this month.<\/p>\n<p>Thirteen new citizens (pictured right with City of Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin OAM), ranging in age and cultural background, took the pledge \u2013 the final step in the citizenship process &#8211; and celebrated a new chapter in their lives. \u201cI congratulate each of you on your decision to become an Australian citizen,\u201d Mayor Martin said.<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs Andrew Giles also sent a message to the newest crop of Australians. \u201cToday, you join a nation that is one of the most successful multicultural societies in the world,\u201d Minister Giles said. \u201cHalf of all Australians were either born overseas or at least one parents was born overseas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone should feel respected, welcome and have a sense of belonging and shar this country with the world\u2019s oldest living culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur diversity is our greatest strength and we prosper by embracing it. Respect and compassion underpin our care for each other and you are making a commitment to these values and to contribute to our evolving Australian society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Member for Barker Tony Pasin also had a prior engagement but lent his sentiments to the newlypledged citizens. \u201cI encourage you to enjoy the freedom and individuality this great nation affords its citizens,\u201d Mr Pasin said. \u201cIt provides us with a sense of belonging \u2013 you are adding to the diverse richness that is Australia.
