It was fifty years ago that the Carpenter Rocks community started taking ownership of the future of its community with the formation of the Carpenter Rocks Progress Association.<\/p>\n
The former Port MacDonnell District Council suggested the small town set up the association and the first meeting was held in March 1974.<\/p>\n
The association\u2019s first major project was the building of a hall in 1976\/77 with the view to hosting meetings, card games, parties and fundraiser.<\/p>\n
With the hall in place, the association then started its long standing commitment to facilitating, spearheading and fundraising for community projects, including development of playgrounds, tennis courts, BBQ area, camping ground, and, even, at one stage, boasted a netball team.<\/p>\n
The association\u2019s success over five decades is also testament to the strong working relationship it has formed with the District Council of Grant as infrastructure and other improvements have been made to the small seaside town.<\/p>\n
Volunteers are the lifeblood of the association, and, in turn the community and to celebrate their contribution, a celebration marking the 50 year milestone will be held on Sunday, April 28, for afternoon tea at 2.30pm, followed by the unveiling of an hono0ur board at 3pm.<\/p>\n
