{"id":9454,"date":"2024-07-02T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-01T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/shewhothrives\/girls-solving-problems-with-stem\/"},"modified":"2024-07-02T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-07-01T17:00:00","slug":"girls-solving-problems-with-stem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/shewhothrives\/girls-solving-problems-with-stem\/","title":{"rendered":"Girls solving problems with STEM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 50 local primary and secondary students have become the latest to participate in Deakin University&#8217;s Girls as Leaders in STEM (GALS) program.<\/p>\n<p>The program, first held in 2020, challenges pupils from Grade 5 to Year 8 to solve local industry or school-based issues with the help of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).<\/p>\n<p>Projects undertaken by this year&#8217;s GALS cohort included developing techniques to capture harmful microplastics, plans for inclusive sensory spaces, and ways to tackle deforestation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/ManifoldHeightsstude_61455.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Manifold Heights student Ava Beyer presenting about minimising landfill.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Deakin University professor and project lead Linda Hobbs said the program gave girls the opportunity to consider a career in a traditionally male-dominated sector.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Girls have all kinds of interests and strengths but may feel daunted at the prospect of entering a male-dominated career or feel out of place in a classroom populated mostly by their male peers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/MandamaPrimarySchool_61537.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mandama Primary School students Kaitlan S, Maisy H, Lily C, Aria Y, Sophie K, Olivia B and Kaysha S with their project designed to help students with extra sensory needs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;GALS makes science visible to the girls and their teachers and exposes more girls to STEM.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It also helps schools see the value of science learning across the years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Each of this year&#8217;s projects were displayed at a public launch last week at Costa Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Students from Belmont Primary School, Mandama Primary School, Manifold Heights Primary School and St Ignatius College were among those to share their works.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/Dr.DavidHalliwell-Pr_61498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Vice-Chancellor of Partnerships at Deakin University, Dr. David Halliwell speaking at the GALS 2024 Program launch at Costa Hall.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Manifold Heights pupil Ava said the GALS program had helped her to feel more confident about entering a career in STEM.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My group decided to research painting bins to try and make them look more appealing.
