AN annual initiative aimed at supporting parents and families with babies born prematurely is being held in the region once again later this month.<\/p>\n

Now in its 15th year, the Walk for Prems event will return to Ballarat for the fifth time with the goal of raising funds for Life’s Little Treasures Foundation, which provides assistance to babies born prematurely or sick, and their families.<\/p>\n

The local event returned last year for the first time since 2019, and coordinator Samantha Smith said she’s looking forward to the follow-up.<\/p>\n

“Last year was successful,” she said. “It was a smaller number than we’ve had previously, but we still managed to raise $13,000 for the foundation.<\/p>\n

“That’s a pretty big effort and without that, it’d be some $10,000 less for the foundation. We had 146 registered and we’ve got about 100 so far for this one.<\/p>\n

“We’re hoping to get 150 if we can.”<\/p>\n

The event will see participants walk around Lake Wendouree on Sunday 13 October from 9.30am near Windmill Drive.<\/p>\n

Life’s Little Treasures Foundation aids families with premature-born children providing financial assistance, Precious Prem Packs, and support initiatives.<\/p>\n

Ms Smith, who had two premature twins at 32 weeks, said the support can mean the world for premmie mothers.<\/p>\n

“No one plans to have a premature or sick baby when they’re born,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Nine times out of 10, you’re unaware it’s happening, and then you’re in labour. My hospital bag wasn’t even packed. Your maternal leave hasn’t kicked in. You’re completely unprepared.<\/p>\n

“This foundation can help support you with simple things like food vouchers or fuel vouchers.<\/p>\n

“To have the support group of another family too, or a mother that’s been through that situation, and knowing you can reach out to someone, is incredible.”<\/p>\n
