THIS week we chat with Bollywood dancer and instructor Liya Roy, who says high energy is a cornerstone of her style – always carefully selecting songs with captivating beats to accompany her performances.<\/p>\n
What motivated you to become a dancer?<\/strong><\/p>\n From a young age, my passion has been apparent to those around me, especially when a Bollywood song starts playing, and their support fuelled my enthusiasm. I began to appreciate the artistry behind dance by watching performances on YouTube and in Indian movies. I learned the importance of grace, smoothness, expressions, and energy in delivering a compelling performance. To broaden my dance education, my parents enrolled me in Bharatanatyam, a form of Indian classical dance. Although I excelled in it, the precision and routine of Bharatanatyam often felt tedious. I continued to balance both Bollywood and Bharatanatyam until I realised that Bollywood dance was my true passion.<\/p>\n How would you describe your style?<\/strong><\/p>\n Bollywood dancing is a vibrant and eclectic dance style that originates from Indian cinema. It blends various dance forms, including classical Indian, folk and contemporary. My style emphasises a fusion of these elements. I like to mix my knowledge of Bharatanatyam with modern dance forms, creating unique choreography that stands out from traditional routines. High energy is a cornerstone of my style. I always carefully select songs with captivating beats, ensuring they engage the audience. This fusion and energetic approach allows me to design choreography that is distinctive and compelling.<\/p>\n Which other dancers inspire you?<\/strong><\/p>\n A dancer who truly inspired me on my Bollywood journey is Madhuri Dixit, an iconic figure in India, renowned for her legendary performances, graceful expressions, and captivating energy. Growing up, her dance numbers like ‘Dola Re Dola’ and ‘Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai’ were always on repeat for me. Watching her, I learned the importance of facial expressions and energetic delivery.<\/p>\n I’ve also drawn inspiration from Dhanush for his natural groove, Shobana for her graceful movements, and Prabhu Deva for his groundbreaking choreography.<\/p>\n What are some highlights you have from your career?<\/strong><\/p>\n In 2019 I was invited to conduct a workshop at the Bendigo Library. It was my first workshop, and I felt a mix of excitement and nerves. However, as I delved into the choreography, more and more people noticed and joined in. By the end, the entire area was filled with kids and parents. Many parents approached me, expressing their gratitude and amazement at how quickly they learned the choreography and how much fun they had. This kickstarted my performances, leading to opportunities at events like Zinda Festival and Harmony Day.<\/p>\n
