{"id":9737,"date":"2024-09-27T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-26T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/shewhothrives\/tolos-story-raises-spirits\/"},"modified":"2024-10-08T13:47:09","modified_gmt":"2024-10-08T02:47:09","slug":"tolos-story-raises-spirits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/shewhothrives\/tolos-story-raises-spirits\/","title":{"rendered":"Tolo&#8217;s story raises spirits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JUST as any elite athlete has done, gun basketballer Marianna Tolo has ridden the highs and lows.<\/p>\n<p>The latest chapter in the story of the Australian Opals centre and now Bendigo Spirit recruit was a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Tolo spoke about her journey to Paris and more during breakfast with Spirit sponsors and guests at Bendigo&#8217;s Lakeside Hotel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s special&#8230;it&#8217;s meaningful,&#8221; Tolo said as she clasped the Olympic medal.<\/p>\n<p>To make an Olympic team and to win a medal was a dream from when an 11-year-old Tolo was at primary school in Mackay.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was not long after the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and Cathy Freeman (400-metre gold medallist) visited our school,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was inspired by what Cathy had done. If someone from my school, my city can go to the Olympics then why can&#8217;t I?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At the age of 16, Tolo made her way to the AIS in Canberra and then to Canberra Capitals in the WNBL.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2024\/09\/TAJ8802_59619.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marianna Tolo met fans who were able to have a hold of the Olympic medal.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Caps were back-to-back champions in my first two seasons,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Her sights were then on selection for the 2012 London Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t make the team, and I was crushed,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Tolo said support from family, especially her parents who had emigrated from Bosnia, and from friends meant a lot.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I went to France to play and fell in love with the game again,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Tolo was then recruited by WNBA club LA Sparks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just before play-offs I tore an ACL. It was 11 months to the Olympics,&#8221; she recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Diligence in rehab meant she was in the Opals lineup for the 2016 Rio Olympics, and defeat in the quarter-finals was followed by a similar result at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-99393 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2024\/09\/Untitled-design-10-1-1024x538.jpg?_t=1728355308\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"336\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And then an ACL injury in the other knee sidelined her yet again.<\/p>\n<p>Tolo was back on court as Canberra Capitals won the 2019 and 2020 WNBL titles.<\/p>\n<p>A brilliant team included Kelsey Griffin and Kelly Wilson, who will be Spirit teammates this season.<\/p>\n<p>Tolo said after a disjointed leadup to the Paris Olympics, the Opals found their groove.<\/p>\n<p>After a defeat to the US in the semi-finals, Australia beat Belgium in the bronze medal play-off.<\/p>\n<p>Tolo&#8217;s focus is now on the Spirit. It&#8217;s a special partnership as her husband, Dan Jackson, is the club&#8217;s new general manager. &#8220;It was time to follow him for a little bit,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Tolo believes she can be part of something special in Bendigo.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JUST as any elite athlete has done, gun basketballer Marianna Tolo has ridden the highs and lows.
