Surf Music: An interview with Forever Son

October 18, 2018 BY

Forever Son’s new single “Kevin Street” was recorded in Torquay.

CH: In terms of writing, who are your influences?

FS: I’m a big Crosby, Stills and Nash fan. Fleet Foxes, love those guys. Been listening to a lot of Margaret Glaspy lately. Psych rock stuff too.

CH: Managed to catch you playing drums in ‘Morning, Morning’ at a Tote show in Melbourne. You’re a great drummer.

FS: Thank you. I love playing drums. When I was like 10 this French guy was like “Come over to my house I’m going to teach you how to play drums”.

CH: Who did the artwork for “10 months”?

FS: That was my Dad. He had some time off work and he was kinda bored.

CH: I hear you’re a big fan of Surf Music as a genre.

FS: I’m a big George Greenough fan. “The inner most limits of pure fun” and “Crystal Voyager”. A band from America called Farm did the soundtrack (aforementioned). When I was a kid I’d get up at like six in the morning, watch those two films and go about my day.

CH: Tell me about your new single.

FS: It’s called “Kevin Street”, it was all recorded in Torquay. These days I have an actual issue with remembering street names, towns and suburbs. I think it stems from when I was a kid, my folks would always name stuff after whoever lived in the street or something that was there. So there was this guy named Kevin that used to live in our street and we always used to call it Kevin street.

CH: Next show?

FS: Queenscliff Music Festival.
