Surf Music: Becoming Jolley humble

May 16, 2018 BY

Go get your salty hands on Jasper Jolley’s new EP.

And so I became a little more humble this week, under the influence of Jasper Jolley.

Jasper is one of the most prolific songwriters to come out of Ocean Grove in the last decade. His self-titled EP has just left the master, and to be quite frank, go get your salty hands on it.

CH: Where was the EP recorded?

JJ: The EP was self-recorded at home in Footscray, same place we recorded the new Bones and Jones record. Everything captured on eight-track and bounced to the computer. Overall it was a very lightly mixed, a bit of messing around.

CH: All of the tracks with the exception of “Fool of myself” are under three minutes. Was this a conscious writing choice?

JJ: I don’t know. I like writing short poppy songs, short and sweet. Try to jam as much into that little piece of music as possible.

CH: During the writing of the EP which local breaks were you surfing?

JJ: Possos and Boings. They are both pretty close to where I grew up in Ocean Grove; I suppose they suit the style of surfing I like the most.

CH: Who is your favourite local shaper?

JJ: Really like the board that Jack Dell- Rennie from Beige surfboards shaped me. Nick Huggins, who mastered the EP, is also an amazing shaper. Had a look at some of his boards the other day at his studio, just some really nice shapes.

CH: Where can people purchase the EP?

JJ: Weathervanerecords.bigcartel.com
