Surf Music: Libby on board for relief festival

April 4, 2018 BY

This week, Surf Music’s Chris Hay chats to local musician Libby Steel.

Libby Steel resides in Jan Juc. She is an honest indie pop artist, praised by Dom Alessio, Declan Byrne, Tommy Faith and Max Quinn of Triple J.

CH: Is it challenging being a female in the Australian music industry?

LS: How many female producers do you know? It’s really intimidating; most studios I have worked in are run and staffed by males. It sometimes makes you feel like you are walking into something you shouldn’t be. Some girls just don’t bother. It’s a real shame.

CH: How close to home were the recent fires in the southwest?

LS: I grew up on a dairy farm really close. Fluid Torquay are donating a campaign for a “Bushfire relief festival” we are curating next month. Line-up is great, expecting around 2k people.

CH: Favourite board?

LS: My Pale horse! I love it. It’s like the first legit long board I’ve ever had; it’s just a massive log, it doesn’t even fit in my car!
