Surf Music prescribes the Sound Doctor

I can understand it. It’s what the people want, what they’re used to. Torquay’s current music culture has formed over decades.

It resembles the overall music scene in Geelong minus the Barwon Club and Pistol Pete’s, perhaps even Ocean Grove without the Chicken Shop.

We love replicators. Covers of artworks other musicians have created. Originality won’t cover the overheads, you can’t blame them.

I’d probably do the same if I were in their position.

But when the local GP puts on a show with Jen Cloher and Ainslie Wills at the Anglesea Hall, all of a sudden you don’t feel so sick anymore.

“The Sound Doctor Presents” is a not-for-profit live music collective. Artists like Jen Cloher and Ainslie Wills are now touring Anglesea.

I had the pleasure of catching up with David Corbet and his lovely daughter Sophia at Sticks & Stones café at Surf City.

CH: Are you an actual doctor?

DC: I’m a local GP at Surfcoast Medical, but I studied music before I studied medicine.

CH: Tell me about show #1.

DC: Lisa Hannigan (Ireland) played an incredible show. We sold out six weeks beforehand, and then she went to play the Opera house the week after.

CH: Do you support local artists?

DC: The third show was Leah Senior and Forever son. Jack Robbins (Forever Son) grew up in Anglesea. We want to support local acts and give them a chance to perform alongside established artists.

CH: How can we find out about future shows?

DC: Sign up to our newsletter at thesounddoctor.info or follow us on Facebook.
