Talking about the important things in life: guitars

February 9, 2018 BY

Local busker, 11-year-old Finnigan August.

So, Finnigan August finishes busking at Surf City.

It’s time to hit Sticks & Stones café and chat the important things in life: guitars.

For those not in the know, Finnigan August is a local busker. He’s 11 years old and has a residency at Swell café and Rip Curl.

CH: How much do you practise?

FA: I normally do around two hours in the morning. Wake up at 6am, do all my chores, then practise classical and theory for 30 minutes. For the next hour and a half I practise didj, harmonica, banjo and surf roots.

CH: Don’t you play video games?

FA: No.

CH: So where does all your busking money go?

FA: 10 per cent goes to The Surfrider Foundation/Sea Shepherd, the rest goes to new guitars and my car.

CH: Wait. Aren’t you like 11?

FA: Yeah, I’m saving up for an old car so I can do it up with Dad.

CH: What do you want to do when you grow up?

FA: Play massive gigs like Red Rocks.

CH: You’re happy busking at Swell for now though, right?

FA: Yeah! It’s fun and everyone’s really nice to me. The people who work there, and Scotty and Meg.

Sometimes people mistake character for talent. There’s no denying this kid is talented but his persistence and dedication to his craft is what will make him great. That’s something that you can’t measure with talent show criteria or primary school grading systems.
