Time is ripe to sample local music

March 7, 2018 BY

Bones and Jones.

So Robbie Williams rocks up to Swell cafe for a quick chat just before his show…

No that didn’t happen.

Something that did happen though, just before the ex-backing vocalist for Take That entertained you, or possibly mumsy, was something a little more Australian.

Last week, the Surf Coast received an official tip of the hat from one of Australia’s greatest radio stations, Triple J.

Declan Byrne, presenter of Home and Hosed, wrote an article on March 5 titled “The hidden musical gems of coastal Victoria”.

The article highlighted five or so coastal acts that Triple J thinks the rest of Australia should keep an eye on.

All bands/artists were from local towns and included the likes of Leah Senior, Chitra, Mark Lang and Zuma.

One of the acts in particular, Bones
and Jones, managed to get airplay on Declan’s radio show the week after his trip, and the week after that too.

Bones and Jones are a surf/psych rock five-piece from Ocean Grove/Torquay.

The Triple J presenter made it all the way from New South Wales and landed at their show at The Piping Hot Chicken Shop in Ocean Grove.

Declan was drawn to their slightly 60s aesthetic “they floored me with a sound reminiscent of The Kinks, if they grew up surfing idyllic Queenscliff rather than dreary London”.

If you haven’t checked out the local music scene yet, the time is ripe, with Aireys Inlet Open Mic Music Festival on next weekend.

My picks: Finnigan August, Jasmin Powell, 3 Humps.
