LOCAL author and illustrator Maxine Flakemore launched her latest book Just Like Babies at the Torquay Library on April 10.<\/p>\n
This is the fourth book both written and illustrated by Ms Flakemore and once again explores the relationship between humans and native Australian animals.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy aim with illustration is to show how animals and birds can be very similar to humans in how they communicate. Each personality is unique and has an interesting story to tell,\u201d Ms Flakemore said.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery day I talk to the birds on our property, the neighbours probably think I\u2019m crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jessica Newtown from Torquay Library said the author event featuring Ms Flakemore included a video and several live demonstrations.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe local community definitely embrace local authors, Ms Flakemore will talk about her artistic techniques and show a video with her interacting with the magpies,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019ll read her book and we\u2019ll do activities using her illustrations.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Flakemore studied fine arts with Robert Hollingworth in Geelong, tutored children\u2019s art classes at Geelong Art Society, Torquay and Bellbrae and began her first book nine years ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had told a story about a magpie my husband rescued several years ago, and it was very popular. One day we had visitors who said I should turn it into a book,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the first book I realised I\u2019ve got a lot more stories to tell and I\u2019d like to leave something for my grandchildren. My second book The galah who went shopping is dedicated to them.\u201d<\/p>\n
