THE Torquay Theatre Troupe is back with their second production for 2023, titled The Lonesome West, which premiered at Torquay’s Shoestring Playhouse.<\/p>\n

The new dark-comedy show is written by Academy Award and British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) winner Martin McDonagh (Banshees of Inisherin, In Bruges and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri) and tells the story of two brothers, Valene and Coleman, who in rural Ireland are squabbling over the inheritance left by their recently deceased father.<\/p>\n

Stuck in the same house that their father passed away in, the brothers religiously drink poteen (bootleg liquor) and hold their old wounds with them to use as new weapons to fuel their hatred. The local parish priest and a young girl from the community attempt to keep them from quarreling, however, do so with hilarious and heartbreaking results, ultimately uncovering a big twist.<\/p>\n

Brought to the Torquay Theatre Troupe by local creative Glen Barton, the tragicomedy is regarded as complicated and relatable. It is played with sincerity and with wonderful adherence to the accent of western Ireland.<\/p>\n

“I’m thrilled to be back in Torquay and working with the Torquay Theatre Troupe,” Mr Barton said.<\/p>\n

“I am a lover of all things Gaelic and honoured to be directing such a talented group of actors and crew to bring this fabulous, complex and macabre play to life.”<\/p>\n

Cast members include seasoned Geelong performers, Jules Hart and Matthew Bradford as the dysfunctional brothers Valene and Coleman, as well as Torquay Trouple alumni Lachie Errey as Father Welsh.<\/p>\n

Tess Parker will also be making her Torquay Theatre Troupe debut as the fresh and young character of Girleen.<\/p>\n

The Torquay Theatre Troupe is celebrating its 22nd year of bringing quality productions to the local community. The Lonesome West at the Shoestring Playhouse is on show until June 17.<\/p>\n
