{"id":106938,"date":"2023-06-28T04:00:08","date_gmt":"2023-06-27T18:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=106938"},"modified":"2023-06-22T09:50:16","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T23:50:16","slug":"event-examines-shifting-culture-of-surfing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/event-examines-shifting-culture-of-surfing\/","title":{"rendered":"Event examines shifting culture of surfing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 50 people ventured out to Torquay Library to attend the &#8216;Women of the Ocean&#8217; event, a live panel show about the shifting culture of surfing.<\/p>\n<p>The female panel of Anglesea author Gill Hutchison, surf writer Ula Majewski and gender and society academic Dr Rebecca Olive spoke about the ever-changing landscape of surf riding as well as their paths into the sport.<\/p>\n<p>Discussion also segued into the unspoken apprenticeship of surf etiquette and also considered the question &#8216;When do you consider yourself a surfer?&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Hutchison said the panel enjoyed delving into some of the topics on the evening.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_106939\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106939\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-106939\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/IMG_0911_97264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-106939\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The event at the Torquay Library was attended by more than 50 people.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We all really enjoyed chatting and generating a bit of conversation within our passionate surf community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I love unpicking a culture, particularly something that I&#8217;m involved in like the culture of surfing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We and the library were thrilled with the turnout on the night.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The number of men who showed up too was really pleasing even though it may have sounded as if we were speaking just about women in surfing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Hutchison said she hoped to continue panel shows, but with people of different ages and demographics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It would be fantastic to do it all again in some other way, shape or form.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;d love to mix it up and spread it out across multiple decades with both men and women.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is so many people in the community who have an opinion, so I can definitely imagine it working again in the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 50 people ventured out to Torquay Library to attend the &#8216;Women of the Ocean&#8217; event, a live panel show about the shifting culture of surfing.
