{"id":107770,"date":"2023-06-29T04:00:32","date_gmt":"2023-06-28T18:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=107770"},"modified":"2023-06-28T17:32:56","modified_gmt":"2023-06-28T07:32:56","slug":"roos-unveil-first-nations-guernsey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/roos-unveil-first-nations-guernsey\/","title":{"rendered":"Roos unveil First Nations guernsey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ANGLESEA Football Netball Club has unveiled its first Indigenous football guernsey ahead of AFL Barwon&#8217;s Indigenous Round.<\/p>\n<p>The Kangaroos&#8217; new uniform, designed by Torquay-based artist Donna Conley of SallouArt, will be worn by all under 18, reserves, seniors, and women&#8217;s footballers on July 8 and 9.<\/p>\n<p>Anglesea female football co-ordinator Jenny Lingam initiated the project of creating the club&#8217;s new Indigenous jumper almost 18 months ago and was thrilled with the final product.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just loved them when they first arrived and I couldn&#8217;t help but become super-excited,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The netball program had their Indigenous dresses made last year and that made me really want to get something similar for the football program.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 353px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/2H3A9361_41115.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"353\" height=\"529\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Myles Brinkworth says he is proud to be a part of a club that embraces Indigenous culture.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The artwork acknowledges the traditional custodians of Ellimatta Reserve and Anglesea, Gadubanud of the Eastern Maar and Wadawurrung people.<\/p>\n<p>Conley&#8217;s design features concentric circles on the guernsey, representing community meeting places and connection to one another.<\/p>\n<p>The surrounding U shapes symbolise coming together to sit, yarn and share in learning from each other.<\/p>\n<p>Anglesea footballer Myles Brinkworth said he felt proud to be a part of a club that embraced Indigenous culture among its playing groups.<\/p>\n<p>Brinkworth said his grandmother was part of the Stolen Generation in far north Queensland and he had personally been on a journey of self-discovery in recent years to find out more about his heritage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been a part of clubs that haven&#8217;t even tried to put out a jumper like this.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I heard about Anglesea&#8217;s new uniform and saw it for the first time, it made me feel really good to be a part of this club.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I definitely see this jumper as a big step in my journey of finding out where my family is from and what it means to be Aboriginal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_107794\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-107794\" style=\"width: 394px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-107794\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/2H3A9367-295x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"394\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/2H3A9367-295x300.jpg 295w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/2H3A9367-1008x1024.jpg 1008w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/2H3A9367-768x780.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/2H3A9367-1512x1536.jpg 1512w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/2H3A9367-2016x2048.jpg 2016w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-107794\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Myles Brinkworth, Phoebe Lingam and Max Simpson holding Donna Conley&#8217;s original design donated to the club.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Anglesea&#8217;s seniors and reserves sides will play away at Portarlington on July 8, while the under 18s will host Inverleigh at Ellimatta Reserve on the same day.<\/p>\n<p>Players can also obtain special-made head socks featuring Conley&#8217;s design.<\/p>\n<p>The club&#8217;s female football squad will host a major function on July 9 when it hosts Thomson, with entry proceeds going towards the Pay The Rent program.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ANGLESEA Football Netball Club has unveiled its first Indigenous football guernsey ahead of AFL Barwon&#8217;s Indigenous Round.
