{"id":110928,"date":"2023-07-28T04:00:59","date_gmt":"2023-07-27T18:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=110928"},"modified":"2023-07-28T04:00:59","modified_gmt":"2023-07-27T18:00:59","slug":"planters-to-dig-in-on-national-tree-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/planters-to-dig-in-on-national-tree-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Planters to dig in on National Tree Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>VOLUNTEER planters across the region will be getting their hands dirty this Sunday when they take part in National Tree Day.<\/p>\n<p>Locally, Bellarine Bayside will again host an event, running a community planting day on July 30 to rejuvenate and refresh a regionally endangered area of Indented Head coastal saltmarsh.<\/p>\n<p>Local planter and Friends of Point Richards member Pam Wilkie confirmed she and several members of the group would take part in the Sunday, July 30 planting in Indented Head.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Wilkie said it was important, as community volunteers, to plant as often as possible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I, like a lot of others in the Bellarine community, am committed to do all I can to rehabilitate the environment across the Bellarine&#8217;s coastline.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of what Friends of Point Richards does is weeding and maintenance, so any chance to actually plant is a real bonus.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s also terrific to link up with other community members and I always come out of events like this weekend&#8217;s encouraged and inspired to do more.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73294\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73294\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-73294\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/07\/IMG_1426-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73294\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Friends of Point Richards volunteer Pam Wilkie says several members of the group will participate in Bellarine Bayside&#8217;s National Tree Day in Indented Head.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>National Tree Day events have planted over 26 million trees since 1996 and is Australia&#8217;s largest community tree-planting event.<\/p>\n<p>Bellarine Bayside coastal conservation co-ordinator Hayley Pickering said the planting event is available to anyone willing to take part in a fun, social event.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ll start the day with a planting demo and a safety talk to start, and then we&#8217;ll be there throughout the day for support as we plant up to 500 trees,&#8221; Ms Pickering said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The area we&#8217;ll be focusing on is really significant for our little population of red-capped plovers, as they particularly like to rest on that part of the coastline.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But with erosion we need to do more plantings to create a habitat linkage and make the beach and shoreline more resilient to erosion events.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73295\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73295\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-73295\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/07\/IMG_1431-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"350\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73295\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bellarine Bayside coastal conversation coordinator Hayley Pickering says Sunday&#8217;s event will add an additional 500 trees to Indented Head&#8217;s endangered Coastal Saltmarsh.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sunday&#8217;s event will run from 10am to 1pm with a barbecue to be held at the conclusion of the planting.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers are to meet at the corner of Brett Drive and The Esplanade, Indented Head.<\/p>\n<p>For more details, email Jane Shearer at janes@bellarinebayside.com.au To find a planting event near you, head to treeday.planetark.org<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VOLUNTEER planters across the region will be getting their hands dirty this Sunday when they take part in National Tree Day.
