TORQUAY’S Vietnam Veterans’ Commemoration Service next month has been moved to Torquay RSL’s Memorial Gardens in Taylor Park.<\/p>\n
As this is the 50th anniversary of the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War, larger numbers than usual are expected to attend the service, beginning at 11am on August 18.<\/p>\n
“Throughout this year, Australians are honouring and remembering the service of some 60,000 Australian men and women who served in the Vietnam War and their families,” Torquay RSL president Bob Brackin said.<\/p>\n
“Tragically, 523 Australians lost their lives in the war, and over 3,000 were wounded.<\/p>\n
“August is special to Vietnam Veterans and their families, and this year is even more special as we remember Australia’s role in Vietnam.<\/p>\n
“We should never forget what Australians have done in so many conflicts over the years and, in August particularly, in Vietnam which was Australia’s longest war until we became involved in the Afghanistan conflict.<\/p>\n
“More than 500 Australians died in Vietnam, and hundreds more have passed on since our men and women returned home physically broken and mentally scarred as a result of their involvement.”<\/p>\n
Mr Brackin said a light lunch would be available at the Bowls Club following the commemoration service.<\/p>\n
Students from Torquay schools are expected to participate in this year’s service in Taylor Park.<\/p>\n
Vietnam Veterans Day is also Long Tan Day, which recognises Australia’s first big battle in Vietnam.<\/p>\n
“On August 18, 1966, a small group of Australians fought an overwhelming number of enemy soldiers, eventually driving them off after what was one of the bloodiest battles between Australians and the enemy, ” Mr Brackin said.<\/p>\n
“Many years ago, Long Tan Day became Australia’s Vietnam Veterans’ Day.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
