{"id":111329,"date":"2023-07-31T08:34:41","date_gmt":"2023-07-30T22:34:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=111329"},"modified":"2023-07-31T08:34:41","modified_gmt":"2023-07-30T22:34:41","slug":"generations-converge-at-star-of-the-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/generations-converge-at-star-of-the-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"Generations converge at Star of the Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>STAR of the Sea Aged Care Residence\u2019s new caf\u00e9 capped off six months of operation with an inclusive all-ages school holiday event.<\/p>\n<p>Organised by Star of the Sea aged care staff and caf\u00e9 coordinator Cathy Rundle last month, the event included residents, trainees and children enjoying a fun afternoon of bingo, balloon exercise, some delicious party food and face painting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone had an absolute ball,\u201d Ms Rundle said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur trainees are already forming friendships with residents and their families, and the residents\u2019 faces really light up when they\u2019re around the little ones, it\u2019s beautiful to witness.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 558px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/07\/WilliamStevensonandG_31637.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"558\" height=\"372\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">William Stevenson and George McKinley enjoy balloon tennis with young friends.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Star of the Sea Aged Care lifestyle coordinator Jen Cotsopolous said it was joyful and loud at the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe children really lifted the residents\u2019 spirits. Residents reminisced about their childhoods and bonded with the children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe emotional, physical, recreational and mental benefits of the intergenerational activities were plain to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Resident June Clarke said the event was wonderful and is \u201calready looking forward to next one\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Lindy-Joy, is one of nine trainees with disability currently working at the caf\u00e9, learning food preparation, money handling and customer service skills, on her pathway to full-time paid work.<\/p>\n<p>She said the inclusion day was \u201clots of fun\u201d and loved winning bingo.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Rundle said the caf\u00e9 will offer more initiatives in the future, including more intergenerational inclusion days.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 623px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/07\/ResidentBerylAllenan_31622.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"623\" height=\"415\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Resident Beryl Allen and Mia enjoying their conversation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe have connected with several mums\u2019 groups and local charity Geelong Mums, for whom we\u2019ve set up a donation collection point at the caf\u00e9 where people can leave their pre-loved baby items,\u201d Ms Rundle said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHosting kids&#8217; parties is also on the cards, and we have the support of the local primary school who have used us for catering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStar Caf\u00e9 really is a special place that means a lot to many people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Star Caf\u00e9 opened in December 2022 at Star of the Sea Aged Care Residence.<\/p>\n<p>The caf\u00e9 is run by services provider Villa Maria Catholic Homes and aims to provide people with disability invaluable work experience, and caf\u00e9 culture and connections for older residents and families.<\/p>\n<p>Star Caf\u00e9 is located at Star of the Sea Aged Care Residence, 1290 Horseshoe Bend Road, Torquay.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>STAR of the Sea Aged Care Residence\u2019s new caf\u00e9 capped off six months of operation with an inclusive all-ages school holiday event.
