{"id":111375,"date":"2023-08-04T04:00:25","date_gmt":"2023-08-03T18:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=111375"},"modified":"2023-08-02T16:17:42","modified_gmt":"2023-08-02T06:17:42","slug":"morrow-revved-up-for-cancer-council-mystery-rally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/morrow-revved-up-for-cancer-council-mystery-rally\/","title":{"rendered":"Morrow revved up for Cancer Council Mystery Rally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JAN JUC local Jon Morrow will get behind the wheel of the &#8220;red rocket&#8221; this month to raise funds for cancer research in the Cancer Council&#8217;s Mystery Box Rally.<\/p>\n<p>From August 11-16, Mr Morrow and his close mate Isaac Johnstone will fire up their 1997 Holden VS Commodore and join 100 teams from across the country in driving 2,500km in five days.<\/p>\n<p>The Mystery Box Rally is one of the largest community lead fundraising events for the Cancer Council in Australia and has raised more than $6 million for cancer research in the past 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>The rally will start and finish in Bundaberg, Queensland, but teams will have no idea where they are heading each day until the morning of the drive.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_111379\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111379\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-111379 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_5151_88682-600x380.jpg?_t=1690938868\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"381\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-111379\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The hotted out 1997 Holden VS Commodore at Fishermans Beach in Torquay.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Morrow said excitement was very high for the coming outback trek.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are very excited to be heading out for this incredible adventure and to be raising money for a good cause.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s our first time doing it, but we&#8217;ve been looking at it for many years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are both very interested in cars, adventure travel and having a bit of fun.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The rally is an enormous deal and ultimately the more money we can throw at research, the better the outcome for everyone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said plenty of time had been put into getting their $800 &#8220;red rocket&#8221; ready for the August event.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were very lucky to pick it up locally and we&#8217;ve just thrown plenty of parts and hours into getting it ready to go.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been about a six-month journey getting rid of the rust, tuning, fabricating and getting it prepared for 2,500km on the dirt amongst other cars.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tyrepower Torquay in particular were instrumental in helping us do the tyres, part changes and mechanical work to get it roadworthy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_111376\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111376\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-111376 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_5136_88608-600x380.jpg?_t=1690938868\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-111376\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mr Morrow will be paying tribute to Torquay Angling Club life member Garry &#8216;Plugga&#8217; Bath during the five-day long drive.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Morrow said Team Jono and Johno was hopeful of raising around $10,000 by the time they returned from the rally.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We needed to raise about $4,000 to just be able to go off and do the rally and we gladly ticked that one off.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve been lucky enough to get some major sponsors already including Torquay Angling Club, Tyrepower Torquay, Signific Signs and Midfield Meats.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our page is sitting at $5,225 and hopefully the donations can continue to come in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To donate to Team Jono and Johno, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/2023.mysteryboxrally.com.au\/jono-and-johno\">2023.mysteryboxrally.com.au\/jono-and-johno<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JAN JUC local Jon Morrow will get behind the wheel of the &#8220;red rocket&#8221; this month to raise funds for cancer research in the Cancer Council&#8217;s Mystery Box Rally.
