SURF Coast locals are invited to have their say via survey on achieving renewable energy in the Deans Marsh area, as part of the PowerMaD project.<\/p>\n

The survey, which opened on August 1, aims to review and refine the community’s renewable energy objectives and a pathway towards achieving them.<\/p>\n

Community engagement consultants Kismet Forward and renewable energy consultants Enhar will work closely with local residents and the Surf Coast Shire on the future pathway process.<\/p>\n

The PowerMaD project stemmed from the Marsh and District Community Action Plan (MaDCAP), developed by locals in 2019, which outlines the community’s vision, values and key actions to a greener future.<\/p>\n

Chair of the PowerMaD Working Group Deb Rohde said the central focus of the project was sustainability and environment.<\/p>\n

“The plan includes a number of climate change mitigation and adaptation actions.<\/p>\n

“One of these was to become ‘100 per cent off grid, independent and self-reliant using renewable energy sources.<\/p>\n

“The first step for us as a community is to revisit the ‘100 per cent off grid’ goal, using both the expertise and preferences within our community and from our renewable energy consultants, as to what is realistic.<\/p>\n

“100 per cent off grid may be a stretch, but there is an option to consider the creation of what are known as ‘islandable’ spaces, for example the reserve or local businesses.<\/p>\n

“This would ensure the ability of the community to maintain services and support in the case of emergencies.”<\/p>\n

With a clearer idea about what community members value and want via survey, the project’s renewable energy consultant will prepare an options paper outlining ways the community can achieve its aspirations.<\/p>\n

Cr Gary Allen lauded the “community driven” PowerMaD project.<\/p>\n

“I encourage all interested residents to take part in the survey so that the renewable energy action plan reflects the aspirations of the local community,” he said.<\/p>\n

The PowerMaD project has been funded by the Victorian government’s New Energy Jobs Fund and the Surf Coast Shire and is supported by the Deans Marsh Community Cottage.<\/p>\n
