JAN JUC photographer Ferne Millen has won national acclaim after winning the director’s choice award at the prestigious Olive Cotton Award.<\/p>\n

The winning snap, “No Labels Required”, is a portrait of Victorian Commissioner for LGBTIQ+ Communities Dr Todd Fernando, who is a descendant of the Kalarie peoples of the Wiradjuri nation.<\/p>\n

The shot is set in native grasslands of Melbourne and depicts a contrast between Fernando’s cultural background and connection to modern technology, which Millen said “speaks to a novel definition of a modern First Nations person in our search for truth and a voice”.<\/p>\n

Millen said this week she was “stoked” to receive the honour.<\/p>\n

“I’m grateful to be recognised in my field as an artist.<\/p>\n

“This prize gives me the confidence to pursue more of my creative projects in the knowledge that my art photography is both appreciated for its skill and beauty and for its commentary on contemporary Australia.<\/p>\n

“This is a modern portrait which addresses the deep issues of our nation; where we are now, and where we are going in order to pave a positive future for the next generation.”<\/p>\n

Launched in 2005, the Olive Cotton Award is a biennial prize named in memory of one of Australia’s leading 20th century photographers.<\/p>\n

Millen’s photo is on display at Tweed Regional Gallery in northern New South Wales until September 24, and will remain part of its permanent collection.<\/p>\n

She and 71 other finalists are in the running for the people’s choice award, which gallery attendees will vote for until the exhibition closes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
