PEDESTRIANS in Apollo Bay can now cross the Great Ocean Road more safely as works to upgrade two pedestrian crossings have been completed by the state government.<\/p>\n

The upgrades have been installed at two locations on the Great Ocean Road between Hardy Street and McLaren Parade to encourage drivers to slow down and reduce the risk of crashes in the high pedestrian activity area.<\/p>\n

Two flat zebra crossings will be converted to raised wombat crossings, a safety platform crossing sign will be installed and upgrades to line markings will improve safety for pedestrians and encourage drivers to slow down at each crossing.<\/p>\n

The works follow upgrades to line marking, signage and street lighting at the Nelson Street intersection.<\/p>\n

“We know how busy the Apollo Bay township can get and these upgrades will provide vital crossing points \u2013 making it easier for pedestrians to get to where they need to go,” Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney said.<\/p>\n

This project is part of the state government’s $255 million investment to upgrade the Great Ocean Road and its inland routes over five years (2021\u20132025).<\/p>\n

This includes $140 million to upgrade and improve the resilience of the Great Ocean Road and another $115 million to upgrade inland routes between the Great Ocean Road and the Princes Highway, which are vital connections for tourists, freight operators and local residents.<\/p>\n

“We know that investing in road upgrades is one of the most effective ways we can boost safe-ty for pedestrians and help drive down road trauma,” Minister for Roads and Roads Safety Melissa Horne said.<\/p>\n
