{"id":113503,"date":"2023-08-20T19:12:30","date_gmt":"2023-08-20T09:12:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/tigers-clip-seagulls-in-physical-elimination-final\/"},"modified":"2023-08-20T19:18:21","modified_gmt":"2023-08-20T09:18:21","slug":"tigers-clip-seagulls-in-physical-elimination-final","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/tigers-clip-seagulls-in-physical-elimination-final\/","title":{"rendered":"Tigers clip Seagulls in physical Elimination Final"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">A FIERCE encounter between Torquay and Barwon Heads has reduced the Bellarine Netball League (BNL) finals pool to four.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u00a0Torquay outlasted the Seagulls in an entertaining Elimination Final this afternoon (Sunday, August 20) at Portarlington Recreation Reserve, with Sonia Harris and her team staving off multiple comeback attempts to defeat Barwon Heads, 44-40.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u00a0The Tigers&#8217; stingy defence was on full display in the opening period, leading 13-9 after 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Torquay led Barwon Heads, 23-21, at the main break as both shooters Daisy O\u2019Kane (Torquay) and Alex Antonio (Barwon Heads) traded goals throughout the first half and into the second.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Barwon Heads continued to chip away at the deficit, trailing by as little as one goal at three-quarter-time, 33-32, but that was as close as the Seagulls would get.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74695\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74695\" style=\"width: 623px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-74695 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/08\/IMG_2525-scaled.jpg?_t=1692521928\" alt=\"\" width=\"623\" height=\"415\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74695\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Torquay defender Bridget Aughton was a brick wall in defence for the Tigers. Photo: VINNIE VAN OORSCHOT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal elementToProof\">A strong 11-8 final term was enough to bring Torquay home and keep its season alive a week longer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">O\u2019Kane finished with 35 goals, partnered with co-captain Rhian Moresi\u2019s nine\u00a0 \u00a0for the Tigers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Antonio\u2019s 34 goals and Erica Schippers\u2019 six totalled Barwon Heads\u2019 effectiveness at the scoring end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Torquay\u2019s Bridget Aughton was named among the best-on-court for her defensive work, alongside team-mates Rebecca Trenerry and fellow captain Rhian Moresi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Barwon Heads\u2019 Alex Antonio, Abbey Clohesy and Erica Schippers were named among the Seagulls\u2019 biggest contributors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal elementToProof\">The Seagulls&#8217; season is now at an\u00a0end, while Torquay will look to gain entry to the Preliminary Final.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">To get there, the Tigers will need to defeat Queenscliff in Portarlington during next week\u2019s Semi Final (Sunday, August 27).<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal elementToProof\"><b>Grubbers humble Coutas in Qualifying Final<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal elementToProof\">Ocean Grove is setting up for another deep finals run with a convincing 18-goal 59-41 Qualifying Final win over Queenscliff yesterday afternoon (Saturday, August 19).<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal elementToProof\">Ocean Grove led from the beginning, limiting the Coutas to just nine first quarter goals, as Candice Parker and Bec O\u2019Neill\u2019s side gained a five-goal lead at quarter time.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74696\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74696\" style=\"width: 674px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-74696 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/08\/0G2A2227-scaled.jpg?_t=1692521995\" alt=\"\" width=\"674\" height=\"449\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74696\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ocean Grove provided a clinical performance in the BNL&#8217;s first Qualifying Final, handing Queenscliff an 18-goal loss. Photo: MICHAEL CHAMBERS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal elementToProof\">The Grubbers gave no reprieve to Queenscliff in the second term, doubling its advantage to lead 28-14 at half time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">A solid second half followed for Ocean Grove, winning the remaining two quarters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal elementToProof\">O\u2019Neill led from the front, handing most of the scoring load with 55 of Ocean Grove\u2019s 59 goals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal elementToProof\">Georgia Ryan provided the other four goals to round out the scoreboard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal elementToProof\">Queenscliff goal shooter Kaitlin Gladman managed 29 goals but the reigning A Grade league best-and-fairest was handled well by Ocean Grove\u2019s defenders, despite goal attack Tess Campigli\u2019s additional 12 goals.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74697\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74697\" style=\"width: 668px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-74697 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/08\/0G2A1719-scaled.jpg?_t=1692522066\" alt=\"\" width=\"668\" height=\"445\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74697\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ocean Grove&#8217;s Georgia Finn (back) was named among the best-on-court for the Grubbers.
