{"id":113807,"date":"2023-08-29T04:43:10","date_gmt":"2023-08-28T18:43:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=113807"},"modified":"2023-08-24T09:56:50","modified_gmt":"2023-08-23T23:56:50","slug":"mp-community-question-proposed-care-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/mp-community-question-proposed-care-facility\/","title":{"rendered":"MP, community question proposed care facility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>POLWARTH Liberal MP Richard Riordan will ask government planning authorities and developers for more information about a proposed residential mental health care facility in the Stretton Torquay housing estate.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Riordan hosted a meeting of about 25 concerned residents at the proposed site on Silvereye Street.<\/p>\n<p>The Haven Foundation has proposed to build a 12-unit residence at the empty corner block.<\/p>\n<p>It said in a letter to neighbours this week that the residence would &#8220;support people from the local area who have long-term mental health and wellbeing concerns to live independently in the community&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Residents would have access to 24-hour support from mental health practitioners.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113809\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113809\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-113809\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_5430_edited_01843-1.jpg?_t=1692834377\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_5430_edited_01843-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_5430_edited_01843-1-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_5430_edited_01843-1-768x448.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113809\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">About 25 residents attended Tuesday&#8217;s site meeting.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A construction date is not yet confirmed, but the proponents indicated the build would take 12 months to complete.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbours of the proposed development said this week they were shocked to learn of the idea.<\/p>\n<p>Concerns raised included proximity to Torquay Coast Primary School across the road, traffic and parking impacts at the narrow street and busy school drop-off area, and the height of buildings in the residential area.<\/p>\n<p>Haven has indicated it will begin doorknocking nearby residents to meet with them and answer questions about the project.<\/p>\n<p>The Torquay project has funding from the state government&#8217;s $5.3 billion Big Housing Build, which means it is subject to special planning assessments aimed at fast-tracking construction.<\/p>\n<p>But Mr Riordan said he feared the community engagement would present the new housing development as a foregone conclusion.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113808\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113808\" style=\"width: 585px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-113808 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_5419_edited_01801-2.jpg?_t=1692834377\" alt=\"\" width=\"585\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_5419_edited_01801-2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_5419_edited_01801-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_5419_edited_01801-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_5419_edited_01801-2-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 585px) 100vw, 585px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113808\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The proposed construction site at Silvereye Street.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The community has now just been told this is happening and they will be intensely informed about it happening, but there&#8217;s no opportunity, at this stage, for anyone to do anything about it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Surf Coast Shire is the worst-provisioned areas in Victoria for public housing.<\/p>\n<p>Latest Victorian Housing Register data to March indicated that 663 households in the Anglesea District, which includes Torquay, are on a waiting list for social housing properties \u2013 and that just 67 such properties exist.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I support the concept of these types of facilities,&#8221; Mr Riordan said. &#8220;Surf Coast Shire is one of the most poorly resourced communities for this sort of subsidised living, so that&#8217;s that is an important issue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, operators of these services and government also have an obligation to work with existing residents to make sure it&#8217;s appropriate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113814\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113814\" style=\"width: 604px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-113814 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_5433_edited_01827-1.jpg?_t=1692834377\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_5433_edited_01827-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_5433_edited_01827-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_5433_edited_01827-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_5433_edited_01827-1-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113814\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mr Riordan heard resident&#8217;s concerns about the mooted facility.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Riordan, who is also the Shadow Housing Minister, suggested a site near the proposed community hospital at the entrance to Torquay would be more appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>He said he will call on Haven to ensure local concerns are addressed in the finished product.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Support services like this will succeed and do well in the community when it has community support and it&#8217;s getting off to a bad start.
