{"id":113840,"date":"2023-08-24T10:33:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-24T00:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=113840"},"modified":"2023-08-24T11:02:39","modified_gmt":"2023-08-24T01:02:39","slug":"torquay-rsl-to-host-vietnam-veterans-day-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/torquay-rsl-to-host-vietnam-veterans-day-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Community gathers to remember Vietnam War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A LARGE crowd gathered at Torquay RSL last week to pay their respects as Australia marked 50 years since the end of its involvement in the Vietnam War.<\/p>\n<p>August 18 is commemorated annually across Australia as Vietnam Veterans Day and is also the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966.<\/p>\n<p>The event was shifted from its usual location at the Vietnam War plaque outside the Surf Coast Shire offices in Torquay North in anticipation of higher attendance.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113842\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113842\" style=\"width: 598px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-113842\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_0616_42545.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"598\" height=\"399\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113842\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Torquay RSL&#8217;s Bob Tyler lays a wreath at the Torquay RSL memorial garden.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Speakers at the service included Torquay RSL president Bob Brackin, retired RSL chaplain Peter Ellis, and several studetnts from Torquay schools.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees at the event included Corangamite federal member Libby Coker, Polwarth MP Richard Riordan, and Surf Coast Shire councillors Gary Allen, Paul Barker and Rose Hodge.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We honour and thank all those who served in the Vietnam War, and we are so sorry that it has taken such a long time for us to recognise your service and the sacrifice you made,&#8221; Ms Coker said in a statement afterwards.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113841\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113841\" style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-113841 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_0562_81361.jpg?_t=1692837058\" alt=\"\" width=\"586\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_0562_81361.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_0562_81361-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_0562_81361-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/IMG_0562_81361-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 586px) 100vw, 586px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113841\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some of the attendees at the service, held at Torquay RSL.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;War is not something any of us want, but we should always thank and recognise our servicemen and women who are ready and willing to step up for our nation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Vietnam War was Australia&#8217;s longest military engagement of the 20th century.The arrival of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam in South Vietnam during July and August 1962 marked the start of Australia&#8217;s involvement in the war.<\/p>\n<p>By the time the war had come to an end, almost 60,000 Australians served during a decade of conflict between 1962 and 1972.
