{"id":114324,"date":"2023-08-27T17:31:48","date_gmt":"2023-08-27T07:31:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/eagles-end-tigers-rule-in-gdfl-eliminator\/"},"modified":"2023-08-27T17:31:48","modified_gmt":"2023-08-27T07:31:48","slug":"eagles-end-tigers-rule-in-gdfl-eliminator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/eagles-end-tigers-rule-in-gdfl-eliminator\/","title":{"rendered":"Eagles end Tigers&#8217; rule in GDFL eliminator"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal elementToProof\">BANNOCKBURN&#8217;S four-year reign at the top of the Geelong &amp; District Football League (GDFL) has come to an end after a gallant four-point loss this afternoon (Sunday, August 27) at the hands of East Geelong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The Eagles found themselves in a similar position to last year\u2019s Qualifying Final and Preliminary Final &#8211; on the brink of elimination despite leading for most of the contest, in which it lost both.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">But the Eagles reversed their fortunes on this occasion, limiting the Tigers to just one goal in the final quarter, while kicking three of its own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">East Geelong was well-structured and composed in the first half, leading 7.7.49 to 3.6.24 at half time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Following the main break, Bannockburn found its rhythm kicking six goals to two in the third quarter, leading 62-66 with a quarter to play.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_81917\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81917\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-81917 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/08\/IMG_4193-scaled.jpg?_t=1693121208\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"493\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-81917\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">East Geelong&#8217;s John McIntyre (32) navigates the pressure.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Bannockburn\u2019s accuracy hurt its fourth quarter efforts, kicking 1.5, while the Eagles slotted 3.1 to edge out the two-time reigning premiers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Zac Smith and Ryan Lempa led the way up forward for the Eagles, kicking five and three goals respectively, adding to Smith\u2019s white-hot August with 24 goals in his past four appearances. Billy Andrew, Will Hough and Austin Mulvahill all tacked on goals as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Bannockburn\u2019s Callum Hetherington knocked in four majors, next to Bailey Alford and Leigham Elzinga, who each kicked a pair.
